Apollo AGB 30 Dirt Bike winter refurbishment

Hi

Have posted last year on obtaining an Apollo AGB 30 as a winter project.

Have got the beast up and running now and it really does need taming!

Hadn't realised these bikes were so powerful and do need to be treated with some respect.

Have renewed a lot of parts that were available online.

Have stripped bike of all extras and plastics even the battery to give the bike a more aggressive look.

Will post more details if there is any interest.

Here is the beast as of today.

Those are smart looking bikes; I have one in my garage that is very similar. Is yours 223cc?

Nice looking bike, love the minimalistic approach.

Can you post up some pics of your air filter setup? What did you use to convert to the foam filter?

Will get some more pictures tomorrow of air filter set up.

The bike came with a very small filter and no air filter box so I knew I had to come up with something else as it's difficult to get parts.

Found on eBay a radiator hose with exact internal diameter for the new Mikuni carb air intake end. The hose has a 45 degree's angle as the carb is at an angle and I needed it to exit the frame so I could add a foam filter.

The hose is clamped with a jubilee clip.

I purchased a angled air filter off eBay UK with external diameter to fit over the rad hose.

The air filter then exited at an angle from the frame and does work very well.

I increased the pilot jet to 30 and 120 main and bike runs really well.

In first gear engine will hesitate a bit and have to increase revs and slip the clutch a bit but once revs are up and into 2nd its OK.

So yes a home made modification but looks good with the red hose and red air filter.

I just had to be careful to cut the hose at the right place to get correct exit angle.

Yes I think it is 223cc

My bike mechanic was amazed at the power from it.

It can be kicked to start but me not being very tall it needs 2 or 3 kicks.

I use a car battery fitted to a small trolley and connect to battery terminals that I repositioned on a mounting plate on the frame and just connected jump leads to battery and usually fires up first press of button.

With choke full on and throttle closed engine will fire up.

If I try to open throttle when I pressing starter button the started doesn't like it and will flood the engine so closing the throttle, press starter and soon as it fires then can open throttle.

My mechanic was concerned that it was a Honda 125 clone starter trying to start a 223cc engine but it seems to cope OK now carb is set up and fires up immediately.

Photos of air filter set up.

It may not be that clear but the carb angles from cylinger so the 45 degree hose from carb enables the end connected to the airfilter to be in line with frame otherwise it comes to close to the left hand frame to fit a filter so then the angled foam air filter angles out to the left of frame.

The line of hose and filter is like an "S" shape from the carb

It's a bit of a pain to remove the seat to gain access to carb but let me know if it's still not clear.

I got parts in UK but guess you may be able to get similar else where. You just need to make sure you get the correct inside diameter of hose to go over your carb air inlet and angled air filter with inside diameter to go over the hose.

This saturday I picked up an 86 XL250r with a bad engine. I'm thinking of using the apollo engine for that if the Honda parts run too high.

If I keep the Apollo, I plan on cutting off the rear frame and making custom seat etc, for a more Trials configuration.

Just another shot of air filter, hose and carb set up. Have taken the air filter off so the angled hose can be seen from the carb.

These Zongshen engines are very good and may fit your Honda frame as they are based on Honda CG engines.

That sounds a good idea on modification to your Apollo.

Can you get parts where you are?

I have been in contact with a online supplier in France and Apollo have told them they will not supply any more parts. I was able to get a correct length clutch cable from this company.

I can get cables, levers, foot rests kick start etc but very difficult to get frame parts not that I have needed them. Seat is difficult and rear mud guard as the one I have was broken so had to brace it up and glue it. It's OK and joint cannot be seen but not sure how long it may last.

I don't know what I can and can't get, but so far I have been fortunate. My engine is not the same as yours. Can't seem to ID my engine manufacturer. But yeah, the mount points look like they will be close enough to work.

If it is just gears that went bad in the honda, I won't swap motors and then the Apollo will most likely become the Trials bike. I would keep the electric starter working and probably even add lights.
