Use to get about 30mpg on veggie in the mercedes. We stopped at a mexican restaurant and I got a familiar wif that brought back memories of that car. It was fun, but alot of work.

I owned a VW diesel about 5 years ago. I was pretty serious about installing a kit that would allow me to run on fry oil. The kit allowed you to start on diesel, switch to fry oil en route and then switch back to diesel before shutting down to flush the injectors and pump. My VW began to develop a host of electrical problems so we sold it before I could do the fry oil conversion.
Many of the farmers are using the fry oil in their tractors and trucks in Arizona. They mix something with the fry oil so that they don't need to start and shut down on commercial diesel.

Another idea:
When I had my old 1984 Benz 300TD I ran a 50/50 bland of
recycled tractor hydraulic oil and diesel fuel.
To purify the used hydraulic oil, I had 3 30 gallon drums set up.
Drum 1 Was up on a platform made from sturdy built pallets. The bottom
of that top barrel was about mid-chest high. At the bottom of the barrel was a on/off valve. I would fill the top (#1) barrel with hyd. oil, open the bottom valve and it would SLOWLY drain into a RACOR model RFF8C water separator / filter funnel http://maesco.com/products/racor/r_funnel/r_funnel.html

That would get rid of most all water and larger contaminates.
The Racor funnel dumped into barrel #2.
I had a high flow hydraulic filter system robbed off of a Gleaner R62 combine that was in the salvage yard. But if anyone wanted to rebuild a
system like this, then one of these would work just fine

For the power unit, I found a used one for $500 (was a larger unit)
BUT, when I sold the old Benz I resold the power unit for $550 :-D

Just so away with the reservoir and plumb your hyd. lines directly from the
barrel #2 into the pump, and from the pump dumping into barrel #3.
I got all fancy and built a selectable -T- valve where I could use the same pump to pump the Clean oil directly into the fuel tank.

Now a lot of this was done because I worked at a farm tractor dealership,
and they were constantly having to deal with used oil storage issues. So I got the used oil for free. Was a bit of work, but was getting 40+ MPG out of the Benz, paying for 1/2 of the "fuel" burned, so essentially was getting "80+ mpg" <---- for what it was costing me.

All this was done back years ago when I barely had a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of! hahahaha! So the "80 mpg" was a real money saver to me back then.

If you ask around some farm equipment repair shops, you might find one that is willing to let you haul off their used oil for free.

You can also use old used motor oil, ATF, and other oils, but be careful with what you use. Some stuff will cause more problems than it is worth.
50/50 blend of hydraulic oil / diesel runs real good on OLD DIESEL engines.
