Shorai LFX14 Lithium battery

anyone else using one of these in the bikes? I have come into possession of one and it weighs maybe 2#. any potential down sides?

Poor cold weather performance. Must use Lithium Ion specific battery tender.

we use them in some products the place I work at makes, my boss surplussed out some batteries and that's how I ended up with this one. the battery tenders aren't necessary and we get great life out of them just using normal trickle chargers

Well I tend not to ignore adamant warnings in the instructions on items known to explode. And, as a bike mechanic, yes...I've seen them explode. Charge them however you wish, YRMV.

in one of our products we wired 3 in series and charged them with trickle chargers, our equipment goes in the back of USAF cargo aircraft and have passed all relevant sections of MIL-STD-810G

You don't need a lithium specific charger for these since they contain a BMS inside that handles the charging/discharging operations. They warn you not to use a tender or charger with a desulfation cycle, though, because the high frequency pulsing of the desulfation cycle can cook the BMS circuit board.


I have one of these in my KLR650 and have had no issue. I don't even bother to plug it into a tender over the winter. Lithium batteries have a very low self-discharge rate.


They have "poor" cold weather performance but so do lead-acid cells. It also has to be very cold for this to actually be an issue... well below zero, which is not typically when we are riding our bikes. You can restore performance by warming the battery via running just your headlight for a minute or two before cranking the engine. Also, it is inadvisable to charge lithium batteries while the cells themselves are below freezing, but since these things don't require tending in the first place that also shouldn't be an issue.
