Riding in sand/gravel

I went put for a nice ride on Saturday and found myself in the San Domingo wash, which is in between Phoenix and Wickenberg in AZ.
The surface was very loose and I could barely get the bike out of 1st due to loss of control. Is riding in soft sand and gravel like riding on a washboard road, where you need to get speed up to float or is it best just to avoid it without paddle tires?
