engine RPMs

what are you guys revving your 229 motors to? I've got one of Tako's clusters on my TBR7 and it starts to miss-fire at about an indicated 9200rpm. does this sound about right?

Rev limiter is usually set around 8500 rpm's.

By Honda Standards the CGs hit the rev limiter at 9150 rpm.
So miss fire at 9200 sounds about right. 8500 sounds to be a very healthy # for a limiter.

From my point of view CGs are not meant to be high revving machines, even more if we want them to last for a long time.

You can take them up to 11.000 rpm but you are asking be hit in the nuts by a small piston..........

This CDI, does take the CG to 11.000 rpm

Also there is this CDI made in Brazilian that can be programed to different settings.
9150, 9500 (CG SPort), 10650, no limiter.

and last but not least to to take "advantage" of the no limiter

If you want to keep your engine in a healthy state keep it under 9000

My bike seems happiest between 6-7k.

While it will go that high it really falls off past 6K. So I up shift or keep the 17/50 gearing at about 60 mph. You can only get so much out of 229cc. Sure push it past 8500 for long and you’ll be looking for a new toy to play with. It’s old man fast, that’s it.

Without changing the cam there really isn't much point in revving beyond 8000 with these motors. Even with my ported head and larger carb I can still feel the power level out and start to drop around 8000 when in the higher gears (3rd and 4th).

This is further evidenced by these engines having a happy place around 6000 to 7000rpm, as stated previously.

Please post a review of Tako's cluster. I'm still planning on getting one but I've had several unforeseen setbacks recently.
