Hawk Carb Set Up

I got the new carb yesteday. I got the 115/30 jets installed. As I'm a complete newb to proper carb setup, I have a couple questions.

first...what should this screw be set to? I believe I read 1.5 turns? it was about 3 when I got it. I screwed it in snug and then turned it back out to 1.5. sound right?

This link should help with general knowledge on carb tuning.

http://www.chinariders.net/showthread.php?t=15539

As for the screw you have to adjust it with the bike running to set idle. The clip you should start with the clip in the middle and adjust from there. Honestly it needle and clip should just fall out if you turn it upside down.

thanks. I used a small screw driver to rotate the clip about 90 degrees and it cam loose such that I could push the needle up and remove everything. from there it was easy enough to remove the e-clip and put it on the second groove.

any suggestion on the screw setting to start with?

Just went through this with the same carb. I'm sure yours came with a 100/20 also. Woefully lean.

Set the slide clip in the middle slot to begin with. That should be fine. The clip you see just pecks out of there. It's a spring-type friction fitment.

Rejet (I used a 125/30 at 3000 feet) and then set up the idle mixture (the screw that points straight up next to the float bowl) at 2.0 turns out. Adjust from there if your "barely off-idle" pops or lean-farts a little. I started at 1.5 turns out and had to open it a little.

The screw you point out is the actual idle screw that pushes the slide up and down. Set it last.

Yes, that's the pilot mixture screw.

thanks! I have it all set as much as I can at this point. now for the install. the only unknown is attaching the throttle. Hopefully it will be apparent when I remove the stock carb.

wanted to post again on this thread to follow up in case anyone using a search for info has more detail. The throttle cable was an easy connection into the slide. There is a slit on the side of the slide to fit the cable in and then the bottom of the cable sets in a hole in the slide. Easy once you see it.

my current throttle settings are 115 main and 30 pilot jets. Pilot screw is at 1 2/3 turns out and the clip on the needle at the second groove. The bike is revving and running much better than stock and you can tell it is not so lean. The only issue right now is at about 45 if I give it more throttle it seems to kind of choke and studder until I back off the throttle to maintain 45. It does not feel like it is revving too high.

after I check the valve clearances I'll report back with further test results.

check your air filter. It could very well be laden with oil. I got a little 42mm air filter so I could disconnect the intake tube from the box now the airbag just serves for crankcase ventilation.

ok, so here's the next round of tuning. Looking for suggestions to improve settings.

I checked valve clearance. exhaust was very tight. set both to 8mm. a bit tappy, but better that than too tight. I will probably double check them.

I checked float level and found it to be slightly low. I used a method of a clear tube attached to the drain (which I opened) and looped the tube up beside the carb bowl. appeared to be a bit low, so bent the floats inside to allow for a bit more fuel in the bowl.

I set the needle back to the first clip (from the second) in effect lowering the needle in the jet. theory was to improve the WOT fueling which was too rich and causing some choking.

I set the pilot screw to 2 full turns out.

WOT is much better. I can twist the throttle all the way up and no sputtering. However, now on the low end when I first open the throttle it seems to hesitate a bit.

overall it's running pretty well now though. going to put the 17 sprocket on the front for more street speed, but otherwise not bad at all.

Awesome work! No stone upturned! Personally, I've never had much luck with the needle sunk to the first clip.....but ya just never know.

based on review of that carb site, I wonder if it's possible that it's due to colder weather. temps seem to affect that based on what I read. I may end up changing things for summer riding.
