Looks like HDPE plastic, it is very tough stuff IME...

Yeah I checked my local target and it was all polycarbonate. I wanted a uhdpe one but may settle for hdpe

If you are riding mostly on the dirt, but not at high speed on the highway, you'll probably be ok. But if you ride any great distance on the highway, be cautious. These engines do not carry a lot of oil in the crankcase, and I wouldn't want anything cutting off the airflow to the base of the engine.

Interesting, my engine feels hottest when I am running it in the woods at low speeds. But that is probably because I can feel the heat more.
