Well this failure could have killed me

As I started to exit the freeway after a 40 minute ride, I could feel and odd scrape/clank sensation through the pegs. I found my kickstand down. WTF? Flipped it up, and found the spring was gone. Not sure when it happened.

Also not sure if it broke, or if I dislodged it putting the side stand down. Since the center stand is such a crap design, it's in the way of putting the side stand down. And the side stand doesn't have a lever or extension on it, since the bike isn't supposed to have a center stand in the way.

So, now I need to find a spring, and also find a way to make the side stand more easily reachable.

Anyone know of a side stand from another bike that fits and has a lever on it? Or other good solutions? I can weld, but if there's a ready-made product, I'll take it.

Something like this:

Oh, here's how I dealt with it being a network guy and all, and I happened to be leaving one of our data centers where there are plenty of them...

I see a variety of universal kickstands with levers. Anyone have any experience with something like this? Ugly, but seems fully functional.

Or more basic, but looks thin and light:

No, that's my point. That side stand in the photo has the lever that would solve the problem. The RX3 original does not.

Sorry boss I have no suggestions other then maybe give it a try?

I wonder if the spring breaks, I cannot say I had it or heard of it before.

Yeah, that seems unlikely. Seems more likely that I hit it and sort of dislodged it when I put the kickstand down during a stop. I suppose another option is to drill the end of the spring perch and put a washer there. Either way, it has to wait until next week as I'll be out hunting from tomorrow night.

Couldn't you just get a welder ( or do it yourself if you have the tools ) to weld a loop like on the first photo onto your RX3 sidestand just below the spring peg. I might consider getting that done myself as I find I seem to be using that peg and spring to put my sidestand down.

I have a MIG, so yeah, it's an option.

I guess I should finalize that CSC parts order (need a few other things too), and hopefully it will arrive in the next few days while I'm gone. It's prime riding season here.

I remember losing the kick stand spring on my Kawasaki back in the 70s. My left leg got so tired holding that kick stand off the ground all the way home.

I normally have zip ties and wire in my tool kit, but I haven't outfitted this bike with a proper kit yet. Stupid me. But at the datacenter there's plenty of network wire!

I had a Yamaha Enduro that would toss the spring at irregular intervals. It had to do with not just a crap spring but also, the jaw where it mounted to the frame where the bolt went through had opened up. Ended up bashing the jaw closed with a big ball/peen and finding a thick spring in a box in the garage, bending it mercilessly and wedging it on. Never happened again.

I hope that's at least CAT-6e so it can properly carry your sidestands signals!
