you know, between those crazy machines at your shop in SC and this Ural, I'm beginning to think you're just a glutton for punishment.

Mother Nature, that crabby old biddy, made my decision for me. Dad's looking at 12 to 18 inches of snow over the weekend and told me not to bother. Thought about going up next weekend, but that's when Dad is going to DC on a US Veterans Honor Flight. Couple more weeks.

With us getting the wet and windy southern edge of this storm, if the house doesn't blow down, I should wrap this up.

It's getting pretty obvious, isn't it. I also rebuild Sturmey Archer three speed bicycle hubs for fun.

Finally, finally, finally, got the FD back together. The gear lash is dead on and it spins oh so nice. Should have had it back on the bike, too, but I did one of those old people things and decided to swap out the u-joint while I had the FD on the ground. Idiot.

I thought the front axle u-joint I did on the Jeep was a PITA. That was nothing compared to this little SOB. Three hours to swap out a u-joint that will fit in my shirt pocket. It was the original unit, so it was really stuck in there. Had to break all the caps to get it out. A punch flew out of my greasy hand and smacked the DeSoto. Nice paint chip there. Dropped one of the new caps and that rolled under the very middle of the DeSoto, jelly side down. Finally got the booger together only to find I oriented the cross wrong when I went to grease it. Had to do it a second time.

Knocked over a spray can of 1st Ayd Penetrating Gel Lube, snapping off the nozzle and it sprayed all over me and my bench. Broke the nozzle off an ether can, too. At least that didn't spray, but it would have probably washed off the gel lube.

Many, many, four letter were said today.

It really sucks that you're so far away, Cheesy. I would have been happy to lend a hand and learn more about what I may get to look forward to with my own Ural. I spent most of my time in the service working on persnickety jet engines, and then was the head mechanic for a small flight school in West Georgia. For as much as some things seem like they're built for ease of maintenance, sometimes it just twists your tail and you have to persuade things with a really big hammer. Glad you got it back together, and the swearing builds character. Hope you have a fantastic week!

It's much better to cuss in a controlled environment. I can't imagine what a PITA that would have been as a field repair.

Cuss or break stuff, that’s the choice I give Mrs. C when she gets on me about it. When I get on a tear with a home remodeling project, Mrs. C always says she’ll never ask me to do another project. She lies. She’s expecting me to use vacation time to replace a thousand square foot of hardwood flooring this year. Because she’s tired of it. I seriously have other plans.

If it had been a field repair, Weld, I’d have found a shop.

E-Thanks for the offer. I wrapped it at noon today. I just ran it through the gears on the center stand, with a jack stand under the side car. No funny noises except for when the Russian version of “true” wheels get up to speed. Shifts into 2wd better than ever. Reverse works, too. And, I had no parts left over.
I’m too beat up to take it for a spin. I’d have to move two cars, the Honda, and Solexes, along with shoveling the April 15th snowfall and my back is saying “Nope”.

That was my take-away from your post; I feel your pain. I fail to understand change for the sake of change.

Haven't figured that one out yet, either, Weld. Try to get her to replace that 16 year old Audi and she's too attached to it(Says the guy with the 40 year old motorcycle). When it comes to 'HER' house, though, oh boy!

Back pain has eased enough that I was able to take a run with the rebuilt final drive. The consensus is...

Gotta squeeze a lot of riding in this weekend because the work schedule for the next three weeks is Denver, San Juan, and Honolulu. Not even a one day break between PR and HI.

Glad to see you got it going. My Hawk has been sitting in the shed for 3 weeks. Damn rain every weekend. Looks like Saturday will be beautiful day for riding then Rain on Sunday. I have to get up with the chickens tomorrow morning to pick up my camper at the Shop (AC Replaced and 3 hour round trip) so I can get back early enough to get some ride time in.

Looks like more riding and training time became available. HI is off the table. Mrs. C isn’t happy about it but I am quite pleased.
An end run was done around Harold regarding the Denver trip by the sales guys to get me out there. I thought Harold okayed it, so I booked everything. As a wrist slap to me, no HI. If you can gather, it didn’t hurt a bit. I was left out of the HI project from the beginning, so being dragged into it now when things aren’t working right doesn’t hold much appeal.
