Jay, if that were the case, I think the balloon would have inflated slowly.

And I don't think the engine was running long enough to heat up....only a minute.

When I shut the engine down, the balloon immediately inflated.

Engine stopped on compression stroke then. Pressure leaking past the rings.

Does this vent have a valve like a Harley? Maybe it stopped on compression stroke and the valve opened?

The breather breathes through the hollow balance shaft from the right to the left.
AFAIK its a timed breather and has an O ring seal in the left cover just before the breather outlet.
