It is normal to need to rock the bike back and forth to shift (when the engine is not running). This is because the dogs on the gears have to line up and slip into place. If running, there is continuous pull on the crankshaft side, so it is usually impossible to shift except from neutral to 1st, or from neutral to 2nd. The "thunk" you hear is the dogs engaging on drive/driven first gears.

Alright unpacked and cleaned the clutch. The steel disk and friction plates looked dirty.... so cleaned the up and soaked them in oil for few hours... repacked everything and added oil...

Issue now is I got max slack on the clutch cable. Pulled about a inch of cable from the handle bar to try to make it tight and its still super loose....

Going to try to work on it tomorrow...

Ended up just buying a whole new clutch

New friction plates and steel plates... new springs and screws

parts come in May 16th

When you stop by let's make sure we talk about the extended side stand. It's a real improvement over OEM because the bike does not lean nearly as far. With your connections at the shipyard I think you could have someone weld an extension of about 3/4" to get the job done. That's what I did on my 2020. The 2021 came with the CSC extended stand so we can measure and compare to your OEM one.

got it put back together

adjusting the clutch cable..... popped the cable

glad I ordered a new cable.... will try to install it tomorrow

Replaced cable

Wasn’t the cable that was broken

Don’t know what’s wrong now… don’t know what that pop was now…

Gonna leave the bike alone for a while… kinda frustrated with it

Sounds like a hard part in the clutch assembly has popped loose or broken. Can you move the clutch lever on the engine by hand? If so, is it really loose? If it is, you'll need to open it back up to see what the exact issue is. Pictures would be helpful, though they are kind of a pain to post here on Chinariders due to file size constraints; you'll need to resize them. You could always post them over in the RX4 thread on the ADVRider forum.

I took every thing apart and put it back together.
I pulled the clutch swing arm thing and reseated it too

I got the the bike running again. Cant say what it was that was out of spec.
But its running again...… feels much better then when I received it new...

Now I got a tic when the bike is in gear.... not while in idle....
New stuff to investigate
