Detours to Moffat Tunnel

A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I rode up to the Moffat Tunnel. The road out of Rollinsville is an easy dirt road along South Boulder Creek with beautiful views and big sky.

Along the way is the small town of Tolland that has a beautiful old yellow schoolhouse.

Moffat Tunnel itself is an active railroad tunnel with restricted access. We parked at the base of the South Boulder Creek Trail and enjoyed the lengthening shadows.

Across from the trailhead parking area, there was a group of abandoned cabins. They were really cool, and we took a few minutes to explore them.

Inside one of the cabins, we found some spooky graffiti. I would love to come back at night, light a fire in the old grate and tell ghost stories.

Thanks for posting the ride report, and the nice photos. I love the old yellow schoolhouse.

Great pics. I used to get out to the Moffat tunnel a few times a year. The drive is really nice from Rollinsville to the tunnel, most of the time. Early spring calls for 4wd, tho.

I can recommend the Best Western in Nederland for kicking back. Plus there is a little rustic motel with a restaurant, I think it's called the Sundowner, between Rollinsville and Nederland. Very cozy.

I am envious of you Detours, I love Colorado. The closest thing we have to that is West Texas Hill Country Big Bend. I am planning to head out there in a few weeks. Very nice to see you and your wife enjoying those bikes.

Tiger, post your pics of the hill country when you get back. I'd love to learn more about your neck of the woods!

X2; we love reading ride reports and viewing photos from different parts of our country, and the rest of the world.

Will do, I enjoy seeing your pictures also it gets me motivated either working on my bikes or riding them to a far away place. I will take the Westex trip on the Triumph TEX and its wired for video from all angles. looks like I will head out the week of the 16th of November.

Awesome pics and a nice ride! It's also nice to see others here riding with their wives, as well! I like taking rides with my buddies but it's much nicer having Mrs 2LZ in tow.

Great Pics!

I love Colorado. I spent 7 months in the South Fork and Creede area and then moved to Alamosa for 13 months. Frequently day tripped all over that area. Colorado is beautiful and definitely worth a visit. I did the Alpine loop on my XR650L with a buddy on an ATV, then did it again alone in my FJ Cruiser. Its a must do if you get out that way. Really miss the seasons and the amazing mountains. Please keep the pictures coming from your rides!!
