Question Where can I get the best deal on a replacement 250cc engine?

New to this stuff, so please bear with me

Picked up a little bike project recently (Cyclewerks Heist)

Rather than messing around with the original motor, I'm considering just replacing the whole thing if cost effective

From what I've been told, it's just a basic CG250cc upright with 5 speed trans

I see plenty similar engines on EBay, all under different names

Some with 4 speeds, some with 5, some with reverse, etc.

Where can I get the best deal on a bolt in replacement?

Post the engine model number. Find it stamped on the case, probably below the stator cover, behind the gear shift. It is probably 165FML. A photo would be useful.

But frankly, I am pretty sure this engine runs. put oil in it (about a quart after draining it). kick it over and verify it isn't frozen. Take off the carb and clean it, fuel the thing and crank it with a good battery. I don't think you will even have to kick start it!

Could be a Lifan, or Dongfang or Zongshen (nice engines)

But really, you probably don't have much work to do to get it running. I think it is a counterbalanced 223cc 5 speed. I'll bet the clutch even works!

Appears to be seized

Tried rolling downhill and popping the clutch in all gears, but the wheel just locks up each time

I wanna try kicking it over, but I need to order a lever (as well as a battery)

I'll try to take a pic of the stamp tomorrow and see if I can find a set of jumper cables

Found these listed on Marketplace for $150 each

Seller hasn't been able to give me details on the gearboxes yet though

That would be a direct replacement as long as it's not the ATV 4 speed with reverse. They didn't have a picture from the front so you can read the shift pattern label?

the only difference is your stock engine is counter balanced and the ones you are looking at are not. The Brozz engine is counter balanced. https://shop.brozz250.com/eshopprod_...ete_Engine.htm

The Marketplace engines might be 200cc as many of these are listed as 200/250cc on Ebay. I've messaged sellers to get exact specs and never get a reply.

The front sprockets do not look worn at all. I wonder if these engines have actually been in service? They could both be a good deal. Intake manifold is missing on one. I zoomed into the shift pattern on one of them, Can't make it out either.

Is there a noticable difference between the two in terms of performance or is the non counterbalanced motors just a bit more buzzy?

If that's the only difference and it will still work, I wouldn't mind, especially since I'll be saving a bit of coin.

On another note, I've read a few EBay reviews stating some gear boxes have weird shift patterns.

Aren't they all supposed to be 1 down/4 up for the 5 speeds?

I saw one claim it was backwards and another claim to be Neutral down and 5 up

Supposedly new, but the seller still has yet to get back to me with my questions, so I'm not holding my breath

New would explain that there is no oil showing up in the sight windows.

A backwards or different shift pattern can be learned (for $150 new engine!), but 4 speed or reverse would be useless for you. I see 6 positions on the gear pattern indicator but can't read the numbers. So hopefully, at least one is a 5 speed. Probably both. By the way, as far as I know 167 is for a 67mm cylinder bore, and that is the standard 223cc CGclone displacement like I have on my Bashan Storm.

Probably not ATV motors as they have kick start shafts. Also, it's weird that your original motor doesn't have the manufacturer's initials in front of the engine size/type. I don't think I've seen that before.

regarding those 2 new* engines...the sticker on the flywheel casing shows the gear shift pattern. I can see them but can't read them.

the rocker covers are the CG125 type which sit flush with the head which to me indicate CG200 heads on possible CG250 cylinders.

So I would say they are mishmash CG250...

However for the price its still a good deal...If you can a close up photo of the serial numbers and the gear pattern sticker then that would take out some of the guess work.
