MBD hits hard

Hi guys & gals,

I didn't plan for it to happen this way, the opportunity just presented its' self.

Anyway I had planed on getting a street bike in the fall. Then putting knobbies on the Dualsport for off road use.

Well a friend told me about a Hyosung for sale with only 63 miles on it, so I had to go look.

Long story short, is I now have a Comet GT 650R.

While technically it isn't a Chinese bike, because it is made in South Korea. It isn't a Japanese bike, so can I stay?

It turns out that the Odometer wire has a short. So the actual miles where more than 63. I think I found the short and fixed it and the body is perfect so who cares if it really has two or three thousand miles. I still managed to get it for 3k less than MSRP.

Nice!! I am lusting after the Hyosung or UM standard 650, or will settle for the Hyosung 250 standard (UM only rebadges the full-fendered Hyosung 250 GTR). You got a great bike for a great deal. Are you still keeping the Zongshen?

Yep, I plan on puttin knobbies on it and riding it 80% off road.

The Hyosung seems to be getting 55 or 60 mpg so I will probably commute on it most days.

The Zongshen has it's advantages too, so I will be keeping it for now.

No problem. I was gonna call the site, "notjapaneseriders.net" but I didn't think it would catch on.

Korean bikes are ok by me. I just wish Hyosung made a DS bike.

Great deal on the bike!, almost read your post wrong...thought you where gonna put knobby tires on the Hyosung!

Oh boy, I'm tired today I guess! but then again guys I know older than myself used to put knobby tires on the ol Honda CB350's and trail ride them! 8O

Hyosung does make a D/S bike, look here... http://www.chinariders.net/gallery2/...g2_itemId=3566 . A lot of the small Suzuki engines are manufactured by Hyosung. Hyosung was smart though...they only gave Suzuki Single OHC engines so they can import a bike with Dual OHC engines.

After re reading my post, I can see how one would think I was putting knobbies on the GT650.

Sorry, they will be going on the Zong 200.

Although. . .

this 650 sure would tear up the straights. But just forget about making any turns on a nice technical trail ride. The Hyosung needs 3 lanes just to do a U turn.

I took the long way home from work today. (1/2 mile to get on highway and 1 mile from exit to house) made it home in half the time.

"notjapaneseriders.net" my Austrian built KTM would have qualified me for that! Personally, I like eastasianriders.net! That covers just about everything over there though and you have to deal with the Japanese stuff too.

A few years back, I had a hot rod 1998 Buell S1W. I took it to the extreme with a 115rwhp engine rebuild. The usual stuff, Jims roller rockers, NRHS Hurricane adj pushrods, 1250 Nikasil cylinders, Mikuni HSR45 carb, Force Motor Products race header, NRHS Hurricane 11.5:1 pistons, .585 Red Shift cams, ThunderHeart programmable billet ignition, NRHS Stage 3 XB/XL1200R heads, etc... When the SuperDuke came out I said that was the bike Buell should be building. My plan was to get one but my biking needs changed through the years. After, I high-sided the Buell and rebuilt it, I decided to get back into dualsport bikes. I bought a 2004 KTM 625 SMC 'Supermoto' bike. What a freakin' BLAST! The most fun you can have with your clothes on! SERIOUS FUN! I'm talkin' total harassment of sportbike riders. I'd go trolling for sportbikes on it. They couldn't cattch me in the twisties, no how, no way! The power to weight ratio from the 625 in the light MX style frame was excellent. As long as the straight wasn't too long you could usually get the jump on any sportbike. Great fun! In the turns, GOODBYE, SEE YA! I'd be sitting in Cool Springs on Rt. 50 with a half a cup of coffee waiting on them to catch up! I'm not that good, but the bike was!

As I got older and had kids I've needed to slow way down. The KTM 950 Adventure S is all the streetbike I need. It's a do everything bike for me. The SuperDuke is nice, but I'd have no use for one. Cool bike though!

I know I probably will never get one and if I'm even half way sane I shouldnâ€™t get one.

I'm just not good enough for a bike with that kind of power to weight ratio and so neutral in itsâ€™ steering geometry. One sneeze and Iâ€™m a dead man.

16 bike mags where asked to vote for their bike of the year. The votes where tallied and the Super Duke won. But most of the editors warn that it is no good around town because it just encourages the rider to speed.

I know if I got one I would be trolling for GXRs to stomp in the twistys. Iâ€™d feel real bad if I pushed someone past their limit and they or I got hurt or killed.

Just a wild fantasy I guess, there is no way Iâ€™m gonna spend more than 5K on any bike.

I have seen these bikes in a showroom in North Canton, Ohio. They looked to be of very high quality and put together very well. Congrats!

I assume you are referring to the Hyosung and not the KTM (for the price the KTM should be good quality)

Now that I own one, I am able to discern where the corners were cut.

1. One part PPG paint, some have clear coat some donâ€™t
2. Cheap breaks. Easy fix, at least it has duals in front and disk all around
3. Mid grade tire. Bridgestone Battleaxes.
4. Skinny rear tire. (160/60)
5. Thin, hard seat padding.
6. Carbs instead of EFI.
7. If high beams left on too long, clear plastics in front fairing melt.

On the other hand;

1. Great engine. 5-8 more ponies than the SV650
2. Looks like a Ducati from 20 feet. (3 people asked me if it was a Duck)
3. V twin sound
4. After market parts are appearing. (3 pipes and 2 fender eliminators that I know of)
5. Cheep!
6. Light (400 lbs)
7. 55 mpg real world driving 4.5 Gal tank = >200 mile range
8. Fairing and windshield actually work, and look good too

One point I want to make here. This is not a good first bike!

The steering geometry is very sensitive and the throttle response is fairly high.
It would be very easy to scare ones self in a curve, let off the throttle and go into a low-side skid when the rear end breaks traction from the strong engine breaking.
