Getting passed by a dirtbike on the highway

I just got a really good picture of a KTM dual sport. This guy was going about 80. I tried to get behind him to get his speed but he pulled away in traffic. Then I rememberd that I was in my company vehicle. This guy raelly should invest a little money in some armour. I35 in Austin is not a friendly place for anyone especially for Motos. His bike was very loud indeed.

Decent basic gear but if he ate it his orthopedic surgeon and wound specialists would wish he was wearing boots and overpants.

I like the KTM's a lot and may very well end up with one, but I vow to keep the stock exhaust. I am done with loud bikes.

Funny my YZ400F and my KLX250S both have FMF Q4 exhausts (the quietest high performance exhaust commonly available) but the KLX seems much louder. The YZ is semi comfortable, and I always wear earplugs.

I love commuting on my bikes . When riding the KLX to work a couple of days ago some old lady went out of her way by an amazing distance to blindly try to send me to the emergency room. I'm on the horn, high beam on, bright orange dork vest in broad daylight and her cataract ridden eyes still couldn't transmist the data to her prune like brain to stop trying to kill me! 8O

Today's ride was just a pleasure. :wink:

Dang FastDoc!!!! Glad you are okay. Prune brain. I like it. Stupidity is spreading faster than the flu! I went to Bastrop Texas last night and went riding with my cousin Adam. We went right through the path of the 2012 forest fire. It was dark so i could only see a little of it. Once we made it out towards Winchester Texas we started having rabbits run across. They were all small but there is always that moment where you dont know what this is. My little bike was running about 7000 rpms at 65. It would go faster but it felt comfortable there. What would be considered too high of rpms for cruising long distances for those little pushrods?

I would run mine past 7000rpm alot. It never seemed to have a problem.

Cool Katoranger! That's what i needed to know. Im running that 39 tooth rear sprocket and it's like having overdrive. I know that that can be hard on the clutch in gears 3 and four. I still have plenty of low end for trails in 1st and 2nd. I noticed a little oil coming out of the vent tube on the top of the engine block on the trandmission. Guess I had a little too much oil in it.

I ran mine wide open about 45 miles on I-85. Stayed together. Make sure you check oil. After high rpm use I noticed I would have to add some.

A little oil out the breather is normal.

7,000 RPMs evokes my mechanical sympathy but does not hurt the bike. It sounds like you coluld pull some higher gearing if you want.

I reread my post. I was trying to be funny but it sounds like I was not being nice. I did not mean it that way.

I thought your comment was funny. I get frustrated with people who drive cars and get road rage at the slightest thing. While other people like Fastdoc have real reason to be upset and yet they keep their cool. I bet you would have even helped that old lady out later on if you saw her in need. One thing I can say is that I have been following this forum for a while and everyone on here are good people. My new front fender came in today. It is a UFO MX universal. That stock fender just looks like crap. I will take some photos of it tomorrow.

I don't like riding dual sport bikes on the freeway. :? I prefer to ride on secondary roads; it's much more scenic, and much safer.

I don't ride my bikes around the city
to meany idiots.. asking to be taken out..
Had a few to close calls over the years...

Our max speed limit is 100kph "60mph"
XR250 cruses at 5600rpm / 105kph
and will sit there all day..
XT660 only doing 4100rpm... with 1 tooth
less on the engine sprocket...

I am blessed to have a Gold Wing for the freeway, but the KLX or my CB175 is a better lightweight all around commuter. The 60-70+ MPG doesn't hurt either. :wink:

Something like an XT660 or KLR650 or Husqvarna Terra are fine freeway bikes. 8)

I will ride the KLX or the YZF on the freeway short distances, 20 miles or so. Both are capable of 85+ MPH but while that is unpleasant on the KLX, let me tell you it's miserable on the YZF

Never ride a 200cc bike on the freeway. 8O
