tree fell on the trunk

just got back from a few days on the sunshine coast.

up there we had a cyclone called oswald come through and in it s wake, after a fair bit of rain, a medium size tree fell on the rear of my ford coupe parked at the place where we were staying. two guys could lift it off and now i have three mean dents on the rear fins. but the damage is contained and i m insured, so there s hope.

anyway, driving home a few hours ago i noticed the steering being really out of whack, pulling heavily towards the left, bearings screaming in tight turns. the front end obviously got affected by the blow, but i can t picture just how the force from the rear would travel to the front. the rear 9 inch diff, wheels, brakes, heavy duty suspension seem perfectly normal.

of course i ll have it checked a.s.a.p. but i m a bit anxious.

That is odd. I've heard of rear impacts so severe that a crankshaft can be hammered through the driveshaft and trans, but never heard of anything like this. Please let us know, and share any pics you have.

I'm really glad you weren't in the car at the time, and that you weren't injured.

thanks weldandgrind, i was inside a building and heard a thud. it s nothing compared to what others have lost and there were a few deaths too.

i hope there s no chassis damage, coz the car isn t replacable in the way a new model is. i ll find out in a couple of days, though it seems unlikely.

here s some pics of the damage and the last one is of the culprit. it doesn t look too bad, but high wind and the added weight of being soaked with rain etc. :?

That sucks.

Stuff happens.

No one was hurt.

Maybe it's a rear axle alignment issue?

That looks like a really cool model; I've never seen a Ford like that. What year is it?

I agree with Doc that perhaps the rear axle is out of whack. Maybe a spring shackle is bent.

thanks, mate. it was a shock to the system, especially when it wouldn t steer right and i crawled down the bruce highway doing 80 for 2 hours with a stiff neck from countersteering.

i could actually see the right front wheel turning in while the left was straight. just got back from the mechanic, it was just the caster pins which hadn t been tightened enough after the last wheel alignment in nov 12 and the impact of the tree undid the weakest spot. so not too bad after all.

now our next stop is going to be

That must of been weird to see. Glad that it's been fixed.

Glad to hear about the caster pins, and it's a really good thing that they didn't loosen at high speed.

Yeah. 8)

I'm glad the problem was an easy repair, Zingshoen. That's a nice car.

Normally I would say there is nothing cooler than American Muscle but that does not entirely apply here! 8)
