Hawk 250 dlx esi no spark no start

As I was taking my stator out and pick up. I notice the shifter harness wires were melted to gather that remi ded me when I was getting trouble codes off the speedometer I notice that it showed I wa6s in neutral and 1st gear therefore figured out that the main reason for the trouble was this thinking it was in gear no start no spark. Che k this before you spend alot of money on parts.
