JB, do you run one paper filter and one mesh or 2 mesh filters? Didn't know if maybe the paper filtered finer particles? rj

The RX3 has 2 metal oil screens, one on each side of the bike and one oil filter. The oil filter is paper from Zongshen and can be replaced by the metal oil filter that he mentions and is pictured above. I plan on swapping between a paper filter and the metal one for each oil change in case the metal one doesn't catch the super small stuff. It also gives me time to clean and dry it before the next oil change. Will then cut the costs of paper filters in 1/2 since they'd only get used every other time or 4000 miles.

After I used a six pack of paper filters, and there were no visible signs of metal sparkles (I took all the paper filters apart), I used the metal mesh filter from then on ....3 more changes.

I have been changing the oil filter every 1,000 miles. Not that it was necessary, but because I was doing multiple oil analyses.

When the "Great Oil Spill" occurred, I put a paper filter back in, with the idea of taking the filter apart to look for metal particles.

Otherwise, I would have kept reusing the mesh filter.

I believe SpudRider also posted that he uses the metal mesh filter.

rj, if you google "paper or stainless steel oil filters", you will find that it's like which is the best motor oil.

Nearly every forum has a discussion on the subject.

Some say that paper is better, and you just replace it, not clean it.

A few have done an oil analysis after using both types of filters, with the reports showing no significant difference.

IMO, it's another personal decision, and I wouldn't dare tell anyone which to use.

I like the idea of a reusable filter. I would think the oil, and magnet would hold/catch anything so small a filter would miss.

Millions of miles on VW''s and they used something as course as a window screen! Lol. The key is to change your oil often with those.

i think someone on this forum ordered extra reusable filters from china was selling them might do a search it was few months ago two works well then you always have a clean one to just pop in

Accepting that they reusable filter catches just as much as paper, I'd want a reusable just for cost, alone. The paper filters aren't cheap, especially with how often I change the oil.

jb, you still have two of these left to get rid of? 15.00 a whack?
I ordered a 6 pack of filters from CSC when I ordered the tall seat as they tossed them in the box and saved shipping. I'd like to switch both RX3's to these reusable filters when I run out of the paper filters.
