if there is a diode where you put it... the starter button is feed with AC current from the rectifier.. not DC from the battery as you have it drawn.. unless the start button is very big and can handle the DC amp draw..

the start button on these is fed DC, because they actuate the solenoid that does the heavy current Pete, AC power would only be occurring when the bike is running...
