I'm inclined to the 'aggressive break-in' school where you try to seat the rings by doing full throttle acceleration in gears 2-5...going to about 6K...and then decelerating with engine braking. This tends to seat the rings nicely. Now, I understand that the RX3 has already been run up to redline by the factory..in fact, up to 84 mph on the dyno. In addition, CSC has already changed the oil so I'm starting with an engine that has clean oil and has already done max performance. With all that said, what's the deal with staying below 5K rpm for the first 500 miles? Exactly what are we bedding in?

It's very hard to keep this engine under 5,000 rpm. I just vary the engine rpms, and don't run the engine real hard during break-in. Ride the bike conservatively for a few thousand miles before you start cruising for long periods of time at high rpms.

So Gerry just installed my new engine and he sent me these break in recommendations.
  • Keep engine below 7000 RPM for the first 500 miles.
  • Vary RPM and throttle angles/loads. Avoid sustained RPM and overheating.
  • Use Lucas upper cylinder lubricant / fuel conditioner in the fuel tank for the first 600 miles.
  • Replace engine oil at 600 miles with synthetic 10W-40.
  • Also check / adjust valve lash .003” both in and out valves.
  • Do not rev when starting. Allow to warm up at least 1 bar before riding.
  • Do not blip throttle during deceleration. Doing so can cause additional backfire since the computer thinks you want more fuel.

I wonder if he recommended higher RPMs because I regeared with a 13T front and 45T rear sprocket. Or maybe 7000 is just fine.

I think 7,000 rpms is fine for the first 500 miles. The NC250 engine doesn't begin to make any power until you get to 4,500-5,000 rpms.

Spud, you and Gerry seem to be in line with what I have always found to be a good break-in for a 4 stroke engine. I want to go through a bunch of heat cycles, load the rings so they seat well, avoid over heating, and do an early oil change. Basically, what I have always done. Thanks!

Thumbs Down

Sara emailed me from CSC to advise that the shipping company picked up my bike today and gave me my shipping number
I was so happy
But then the hammer dropped
When I went to check the tracking of my bike on the shipping website
I found out the bike was being shipped to the wrong location
Someone at CSC dropped the ball BIG TIME
I tried calling the shipping company, but they said the bike had already left the terminal
I will need contact the shipping company tommorow to make sure they can reroute delivery of my bike to the correct location, which will delay delivery at least 1 day if I am lucky
So disappointing after I was requested to email CSC a confirmation of the shipping address

That's terrible! I'm glad you found it right away. Hopefully they can reroute it without too much trouble.

Andrew has about $4000 of farkles, doo dads, and goodies that he's been accumulating in anticipation of his RX3's arrival.

If he's riding today, they may collect dust until November when our weather cools down.

If he's farkling right out of the box, he may not be ready to ride until September.
