Ahhhh, the joys of owning a 35 year old Honda.

About ten days ago, I was riding home from work and decided to hammer it a bit. Shifted into 3rd at 60 and..........blew the end out of the left muffler. So, I got online and started looking for replacements. I found some repops offered up through David Silver Spares. However, at $130 a pop plus shipping, I was looking at $300+ for a pair.

Well, low and behold, HD Sporty mufflers are a pretty straight and recommended replacement for the Maggot mufflers. And they can usually be had cheap as long as you don't go through HD to get them. I found a pair on Craigslist for $20. Only real problem I have is that these came off of a later Sporty with a balance pipe and therefore have a couple of bungs I don't need.

So, into the horizontal band saw at the shop and Presto!!!, no more bungs.

A couple of 1 3/4" OD adapters, an oxy-acetelyne torch, a bit o' brazing rod and 15 minutes later.

I only had a limited amount of time(lunch)for government work today, so that's as far as I got. The piece of flat stock in the first pic is the new brackets. So, twenty for the cans, eight for the adapters, and four bucks for the steel. Even with my time, that's still a lot better than $300.

I can't wait to see them mounted on the Honda.

I've spotted similarly priced Sporty mufflers on the local CL, and I've often wondered what I could do with them. Nice job. Looking forward to hearing your impression of the sound. A vid would be terrific, if you have time.

With a little luck, tomorrow.

One step closer.

I'm not married to the heat resistant paint. I may remove it down to the weld and leave it at that. That run is embarrassing, too.

Good to see some other CX fans on here. I put a pair of HD mufflers on my 80 CX and they sounded great, not too loud until you open the throttle. They were from a later model 1600cc and fit over the outside of the H box. I ride a 81 GL500 Interstate nowadays.

Good to hear. The GL has the transistorized ignition, right?

The extensions I fit on the mufflers should just fit inside the Hbox. I might need to use the tailpipe expander just a bit. I'll know tomorrow.

Yes the GL engine has transistorized ignition and a few other differences from the CX. Centrifugal spark advance, different cam profile, different rear engine cover, 1mm smaller carbs. That all gives it more power at the low end and less at the high end which is good for a touring bike. Won't run with a dead battery like the CX though.

Well, no love today. I forgot that it was my turn to run down to the late FILs house to do the weekly yard work. That blew the better part of the day.

I did manage to get one muffler hung this afternoon but I had to throw out all the brackets I had made and start from scratch. Suffered from 'It looked good on paper' syndrome.

Hey, Mudflap. Did you have to rejet your carbs when you hung the Harley cans?

No need to rejet if you leave the H box in place.
