I do have both my iPhone 7 Plus which is highly water resistant and I use it for lots like I have dropbox and have told it to cache the bikes manual, copies of my ID/passport/title/registration/insurance, multiple GPS applications and a few that support offline maps. I also have a Spot. I added additional GEOS options beyond the basics like search and rescue and medivac. I am considering next year moving to an Inreach since it supports two way communications rather than the spots one way and the Inreach uses the much better iridium sat network. I also installed USB ports on the bike so both of those devices stay running and won't go dead. It's too bad that the spot won't recharge on USB so I use Lithium batteries and they only get used while the bike is off. My wife LOVES getting the OK check-in from my spot since so many places I've ridden don't have cell coverage.

Fj...what ever you do for a living I'm sure is successful, however you are so well equipped and becoming an adv authority, you might consider becoming a guide in the future selling tours. Mabey you can find some good routes when you go to Alaska.

I've seen tool tubes on pictures of 'real' adventure bikes but haven't seen any for sale on local sites. Any suggestions, or do I need to go to the plumbing store and then get creative?

In the US, the tool tubes were originally used to keep the service manual for tractors.

Don't know if they are available in NZ.

So the tool tubes are sold by twisted throttle for over $20 USD each, on agri they are like $6 each but with expensive shipping. You can also find them on eBay with global shipping. Others have done plumbing pipe with a cap on one end, and thread on other with screw on cap. Can make custome diameter and length then.

The budget tool tube is from Harbor Fright:

You could also buy one of their tool rolls, or make your own:

I don't have a bike now but my car's tool bag is full of Harbor Freight tools. Cheap enough to be stolen, and if I have a problem where the tools are breaking I need to call a tow truck anyway.

Retired???? I wish. Only way I could retire is if I hit the Lotto. lol I should be retired by now but the past 17-18 years has been one step forward two steps back. But I'm a half glass full kind of guy and just keep moving forward. Isn't life wonderful? But back on topic. I'll more than likely do my own out of PVC pipe just because I like building things.

You'll notice when you get yours that there is a small vent hole. I filled it with hot melt glue to make it waterproof.

Does the SpeedoDRD really work to fix the speedometer? I assume it's the universal model.

I bought the universal model. My speedometer is now spot on with the GPS and the radar signs the county puts up on a couple of the 45 MPH roads we locals like to run at 60. But I think it messed with the odometer a bit. I used to average 190 miles and burn 3 gallons. Since I installed the SpeedoDRD my average is now 175 miles when I burn 3 gallons. I keep forgetting to test with the GPS to see if it's actually under reporting now or reporting the truth.

As stated, the SpeedoDRD does correct the speedometer. You can buy any of the models and then just cut off the plug to wire to the bike. That's basically what the universal model is...no plug, just bare wires.
As far as the odometer goes, here is why it doesn't fully correct it. Apparently the speedo works by picking up a full cycle of the magnet unit on the wheel but the odometer uses 2x the rotation. So when you correct the speedo it won't fully correct the odometer. I don't find this an issue. I realize there is a 5% or so error in the odometer so when it comes to maintenance intervals I just know to adjust them a bit...if at all and if I'm really wanting to figure out my fuel mileage based on a tank and refill then I just run SpeedTracker on my iPhone for a long trip.
