I didn't mention this in the ride report but the Maggot had some issues on the long ride over the weekend. I could run 70-80 mph all day and not miss a beat. But, accelerate from a stop and the bike would miss and sputter up to 5000 rpm. At 5000 rpm, it was like a switch was thrown and it ran great. What was really irritating was that it was intermittent. If I was running through town, it was fine. Most of the time.
I was really hoping that it wasn't the low speed coil on the stator because that would require an engine drop and case split to repair. So, I started paying attention to throttle positions. If I went past 1/4 throttle, it would miss. Below that, fine. Yet, no matter the throttle position, at 5000 rpm it ran great. So, that eliminated the low speed coil. For grins, I did WOT from a stop. Bike ran like it was running on one cylinder until 5000 rpm then it felt like I got kicked in the chest and the rear tire broke loose. That got me to thinking about the questionable CV slide in the left carb and that it might be sticking. Get home and pull the cap off the left carb. The piston slides nicely for about a 1/4" and then binds. It takes a good yank to get the piston to move again. AHA. I grab the bum set of carbs and try one of its pistons in the bike. Smooth as silk. So, I swap both sets pistons, springs, and caps from the bum carbs to the bike. While I'm at it, I replace the jets and float bowls. As yesterday was a monsoon and the Blackhawks were in the process of winning the Stanley Cup , I didn't ride until today. Bike started on half choke(hasn't happened in two years), idle felt better, and no matter the throttle position, no missing. Should have done this a month ago.

I knew those carbs would come in handy. Excellent troubleshooting.

You'd think that Honda, of all people, could make a clutch cable that would last longer than 36 years. Broke on the ride home from work. Too bad that when I unpacked Sunday, I left the spare cable on the bench and not back in the trunk. Mrs. B had to bring the spare. Three minutes from the time I took the seat off til I had the old cable on the ground. Waited 15 minutes for Mrs. B to show up, yet I was only three miles from home. Twenty minutes to install and adjust. Ten of that was undoing it and rerouting it the correct way. Guess I better check out the rest of the original cables(all of them).

How do you get Mrs. Cheesy to bring you a cable, much less identify one?

As FastDoc might reply, that is exactly my point.

Through the magic of cellular technology, she carried her phone into the garage to where I had placed the cables. All cables are in original packaging. Told her to bring the one that said 'Clutch'.
Also, I had picked up dinner, so if she wanted it hot, she had to come and get it.

He dropped off the radar when his job changed. I was really hoping that he'd come back, but so far he hasn't.
