Thanks sport and seer, sounds like we are of the same opinion. I'll put the 50t back on for a while. It seems you have found 5th gear is weak on small steady inclines...just slows down. I'll wear this stuff out, 17/50.....and when the chain shreds I'll buy a whole set. 17/47 or 16/47. I'll keep you posted. I found that chart on bikebandit.com

Grin Spark plug change..

I have the mikuni clone, 115/30 jets. I have modified the air box lid to allow more air in. Practicing for motorcycle test I noticed engine running poorly. Quickly clears up with revving engine. I read the NGK website that talks about the need for a hotter plug..."slow operation plug becomes loaded" . This is what mine was doing. I have noticed soot at the he rear of the muffler. Black bike is clean...not an issue on that bike. I installed NGK DR7EA plug. Gapped .7 mm. Now for the results .... No stumble at first acceleration leaving a stop sign. RPM increases rapidly. Able to accelerate in 5th gear up a steady slight grade. Previously I would not accelerat, It was slowing down at full throttle. It's a small tweak with great results. Hope others can find this helpful. I didn't want to take off the carb again. Easy fix.

Grin 70 mile ride.

This is my first long ride around the Dark Corner South Carolina and western North Carolina. The Hawk performed great. Most of the 4 hour ride was 25 mph to 55 mph. A couple of highway stretches the Hawk saw 65 mph. Most of the time was on some nice dirt mountain roads. Be careful on the gravel, it's like riding on marbles...yikes. My favorite roads were Pinnacle mountain road and Green River Road. Very long one lane dirt roads. The Hawk will see more of this. Maybe next time....Tail of the Dragon, Walhalla,SC to Highlands, NC

Thanks Sport. I was just looking at Cherohala.com. Thanks for a great trip idea. We have a trailer set up to haul the bikes. From upstate SC it about a 2 1/2 hour drive....but looks well worth it. I'm in!

at the intersection of 143 and Santeetlah RD there is a road on google maps which is listed as Old Santeetlah Rd. that will go up and cross the Cherohala where it becomes N River Rd. it's all gravel back roads. Follow it all the way to River Rd and turn right. That will go past Bald River Falls. From there you can go back to 143 and into Tellico Plains. There's a ton of them north of the Cherohala too. have fun!!!
