Lifan Pony 100

This bike interested me. Just looks fun and simple.

I found this information. There are also tons of YouTube videos as it appears to be very popular overseas.

Surprised to see this. Is it another name for CDI or something totally different?

TCI (Transistor Controlled Ignition)

TCI often found on those Suzuki. NEEDS reliable DC source & the coil is TOTAL different.

ALWAYS bring a spare capacitor IF it's a TCI, otherwise...

Some states will license them anyway, but one should make sure they are street legal. These are the most recent LIfan product to get to the US, as they were planning a comeback to the US (perhaps still are?)

Jeff thanks for the link. I don't like that shipping damage especially the gash in the tire. But so far the purchaser appears to be happy with the bike.

Thanks, Adjuster, for the bike--googled Lifan and found the link to the company. Looks like they will only offer this bike as far as streetable dual sports go (or ANY dirt products go); a few street bikes and a couple electric scooters (seem interesting for urbanites who don't need to ride too far), as well as electric bicycles (not as 'sporty' looking as SSR's electric bicycles). OK, a little off topic, but here is the link:

http://americanlifan.com/

They are located in Ontario, California, near several other distributors (such as SSR, BMS, Excalibur, CSC, etc) in the so-called 'inland empire' of the greater metropolitan area of Los Angeles (they used to be headquartered in Texas)

Lifan is a very well known quality company. They are one of the largest auto makers in the world even though virtually unheard of here in the United States in regards to autos. The fact they are attempting to increase/build a web presence and distributor presence here in the USA is a very good thing. They are a much larger more established manufacturer than any of the other China bike offerings with possibly the exception of Zongshen which is also a huge overseas company everywhere except the USA. I see the USA website appears to still be "under construction" but this is potentially a huge deal for us.

Come to think of it, I remember seeing Lifan getting certification for their 100cc bike on the EPA site last year, so the Pony must have been around for a while. I wonder how it compares to the Skyteam PBR, which used to be California legal (a certain allotment of them), and used to be offered for $1k all over the L.A. Craigslist. I am guessing some of those are still available via Skyteam USA, and Pitster Pro.

I like the simpler look of the Lifan.

My deal breaker was a guy here in Yuma rides a Honda Grom. One night, he pulled out of a side street and pulled up next to me. Keep in mind, I drive a '06 Grand Prix, so not a tall vehicle by any means. I could not really see the guy, his bike was so small!

However, I see the appeal for all of these minis when taken in the context of camping or RV'ing or living in Europe. Here in Yuma, we have a few massive RV parks that get packed by snowbirds, or I can imagine tourist destinations in other parts of the country are massively large RV parks, too. Or getting to fishing spots. I do like these small bikes, and have lusted after the 'original' CT-70 since I was in the 5th grade and saw a high school girl sitting on one outside my older sisters' high school when my mom and I were picking up my sisters--it was love at first sight--the CT-70, not the girl, .

Looking at this, and I guess it was mentioned on Planet Minis, this is based on the Honda Ape, a bike I am not familiar with.

The size is my concern as well. I am 6'1" 220lbs on a light week. I love the overall simplistic look of the Pony 100 but it may be too small.

To kind of half-hijack this for a moment:
This was my primary concern when I had the bug to buy a
Grom. Also, I L O V E those tricked out Ruckus scooters ( And the 150cc MadDog clones) But it is the same situation, only worse.
I was looking at the Grom when I bought my 2014 Genuine Roughhouse50.
The RH50 is a very tall scooter from the factory. Like a Zuma.
No clue what my new ride height will be -- to the top of my Helmet-- now that I have dropped the front 2" and the rear 3'' and am installing the already purchased lower seat. But it will still be MUCH taller than the custom Ruckus scoots are.
