169fml engine identification

hello could somebody help me identify what engine i have engine number says 169fmi it came from a kids pitbike and the cylinder is marked 196 .ive stripped it down to replace the piston and the piston is 63.5mm but the piston doesnt reach the top of the cylinder on tdc

If it has rocker arms with pushrods that connect to a high-mount rocker arms and a camshaft, it is likely a Zongshen style 125cc. The '250' is actually 223cc, and has a 67mm bore. I think the 125's have the 63mm bore.

Incorrect, my guess is it's a ZS163FML, a ~200cc Zongshen-built engine. I know because I have one similarly marked.

The 125s are almost always 56mm bore x 49.5 stroke (stock Honda dimensions). The 200s are mostly 63.5 bore x 62.2 stroke (again, following stock Honda conventions for their 200cc ag bike).

If you look through the earliest threads I've posted (I haven't posted too many), I came across a similar conundrum, you can look at my engine to compare.

Well, how does the number stamped get translated? do they just make that stuff up?
163 169 eh what's the difference? I thought the 169 should be the bore. Guess not.
I was guessing. But my sg is stamped for a 67 bore ZS167xxx, and it's a 223cc from what I understand. A 69mm would be a 250cc I think. a 63 would be a 200? so what would a 125 be?

The first digit indicates the number of cylinders, the second two refer to the nominal bore diameter (though there's a chance with older engines that this is mislabeled but is also generally rounded, as I presume it to be in this case).

There isn't a direct correlation to bore diameter and displacement, the engines are classified by their class, rounding up, and there are even some examples of different engine architecture being labled with the same letters because of the simplicity of the engine labeling system, for example Zongshen copied the TW200 engine (using a conventional transmission, I think they were used in the GY-2 motorcycles IIRC) that was the 167FML, and there also were CB/CG models that were labeled 167FML, despite the fact that the crankshafts, cylinders, and cylinder heads would be different. There are also 166FMMs which are "250" engines that are generally based on CRF230 engine dimensions.

The F (which can be other letters, too) indicates that it is regular air cooling, the first M is for motorcycle, and the last letter indicates the displacement class. For example, a 167FMM is a horizontal single cylinder "250" class engine, likely around 223cc, while a 1P54FMJ could be a 140 or 150cc vertical motor. A 1P39QMB is a 50cc class scooter motor, likely in the GY6 family. A 125cc vertical CG/CB motor would most likely be a 156FMI.
