Alterative motors ro replace CG250

My Bashan motor looks like potentially too much internal damage if I compare cost of repairs to value of the bike.

So far I can 't find a local used CG motor to replace, and shipping from China is way too expensive, can get a late model, low mileage complete bike for less.

So, what other non-CG air-cooled motors will fit in the engine mounts? Any of the Honda XRs?

Not sure I trust any of the 'lesser-brand' CG motors right now. I would be happy with the Zongshen 'CBB' 200, but I don't think any of those were imported here.

The XR200 and the XL185 / XL200 would both bolt in. You'd have the change the countershaft sprocket on the XR200, since it uses a 520. The XL would have the charging system needed for a battery.

Or, change to a 520 chain. If the Bashan bikes use the same rear sprocket as the Hawk, then rear sprocket JTR279 is the ticket.

Just out of curiosity, what internal damage are you dealing with?

I ask, because a new crankshaft and connecting rod is ' $50.
Cylinder and piston kit with rings and gaskets is around $85
A new CG250 head runs around $60.
Main and Countershafts with gears and dogs for the transmission, usually $65-70.

Obviously I could keep going, but even if you went hog wild and got all of the major components, head, and subsequent bearings, new camshaft, clutch, etc. You would maybe spend $500 tops, and it is likely you don't even need all of that stuff.

I would say, tear down the engine and inspect things. You may find that you don't need to spend nearly as much as you think you do to fix it.

Do you like to gamble tonyscott123 ? because if you try and import a engine US Customs may seize it from you at the port of entry, but Customs does not check everything and it could get thru

Only CKD engines are allowed unless you are the original importers like a RPS or CSC.

The internet is full of them. The easiest source is Ali-express or ebay. The thing you need to know before ordering from any source is exactly what specs you need to buy. Even though these are all technically "CG250" engines, every manufacturer can do them a bit differently. This may be less true with the gearbox side of things, but cylinders, heads, rods, and pistons can have small variations in wrist pin diameters, etc.
