More New Wheels

Dang, I wasn't going to bring home anymore bicycles. Problem is this one said, "Only twenty bucks, Mister. Buy me." So I did.

Thinking a 1975 Raleigh Gran Prix. Middle floor of the top end bikes of the era.

I was thinking an Apollo bike ,cottered steel crank ,high mount shifters ,and a quick release front wheel don't really all mix together quite right on a higher end bike ,is the saddle a brooks as it's worth $100.00 on its own .

Good grief, no. Hate those Turkey Wings.

Bruce-The saddle on this one is an Ideale 80. On the fourteen bikes in my garage, there are four Brooks, two Wrights, two Bim 39, now two Ideale 80, one Middlemore, and one Velo-Orange(ick). The 52 Monark has a vinyl covered Troxel and Fat Ass Wally has a Flite. Somewhere in my stash I have a Dunelt branded B33. One of those Wrights I got new in 1970.

Just getting ready to toss it up on the Park stand and give it a good going through.

Apron, check.

Cotter Press, check.

Metric wrenches, check.

Beer...beer? Nuts, I forgot to buy beer this week.

LOL You must be an actual rider/enthusiast. I only had one as a kid to get me to the local 7-11 for a slurpee. I can still remember the first time I rode a 10 speed street bike. I couldn't believe how smooth it was over my prior Huffy's.

Used to be an actual rider, still an enthusiast. Getting hit from behind by a kid in a Lancer doing 45mph in a 35mph zone has caused me to seriously think twice before I hit the road. Now, I usually just ride the 63 year old cruiser into town for coffee.

Before

After

My glasses were hanging off the front of my shirt. Somehow they stayed put.

Somehow I got away with only 26 stitches but 15 were in my right knee. The other 11 were in my right forearm.

Three weeks before I could walk without crutches and a year before I was able to throw away the cane. I was back on a bike within 6 weeks, tho.
Where I was 5000 miles a year before I got clobbered, I'm now maybe 200.

No, Spud. He claimed he was sleepy and closed his eyes for a few seconds. Good thing I was there or he would have plowed into a phone pole.

Adjuster-Not sure. I've had two knee surgeries and a ruptured Achilles tendon since the accident. I can safely say that one of the surgeries was not related, I caused that one myself. I suspect most of my aches and pains have more to do with me pushing 60, having arthritis, and being a jock in my youth than the accident.

I do get asked what it felt like to get clobbered. Basically tell them that if they played football, think of the worst hit they took. I wish it felt that good.

I was hit in the early 80's ,bent up the rear of my bike only ,and I wouldn't get on a road bike for several years as I lost my nerve ,getting beat up like Cheesy ,I probably would not of ever got back on another road bike .My hats off to him ,I am generally a happy risk taker but playing with transport trucks on the highway no longer interests me .

I understand completely.

I'm just finishing up a two year break. I started coming up with excuses why I couldn't ride somewhere and I woke up one morning and said "I just don't want to do this anymore", and stopped bicycling.

The Honda has been pretty good therapy. Taking the long break has helped. I also started back at hanging around the LBS and doing some wrenching when they get old stuff in. And losing four inches off my waist has had something to do with it.

So far, the first couple of rides on the Grand Prix have been a lot of fun.

Yee haa. Found a nice new saddle for the Raleigh.

It's a later Velo brand saddle that has been recovered with some really nice hide. I'm figuring on riding this until my bum callouses return, then switch back to the Ideale. Or maybe not. We'll see.

Just about have this dialed in to how I like it.

As I reuse most everything I can, or buy used, all I have in the bike is $15 for the saddle, a buck for the bottle cage, a buck in fasteners, $5 for brake pads(New is good here)and twenty for the bike. The rear rack, pedals, shifter, flickstand, and pump came from my stash.

Thanks.
What does it mean when the $3000 bike hasn't turned a wheel in years but the $20 bike can put a big grin on my face.
