2016 Hawk 250 Recommendations Needed
Hi Everyone -
So I have a 2016 Hawk 250 that I bought to teach my kids to ride. Well it didn’t work out lol and the bike only has 150 miles on it. It’s been sitting for some time obviously. I’m getting it into riding shape… So far I’ve done the gears, new chain, new carb, spark plug, exhaust, air filter, new battery, and changed the oil. I rode it the other day and noticed that I have zero rear brakes which doesn’t make sense to me since the front brakes are fine. I’m going to change the brake fluid but am thinking something else with the rear brakes may be wrong. Any suggestions. ALSO… is there anything else I should address like the valves or the fork oil due to the bike sitting for so long? Thanks in advance for your help! |

brakes are brakes. nothing unique on the 250 rears. remove the caliper and see if there is any crud or obstruction around the piston inside. if you have a compressor, you could use air into the hole the bolt goes into to blow the piston out to check further inside. be gentle and don't scratch the piston. should be a rubber ring inside to retain fluid. it's possible it's gunked up.

I would flush both front and rear brake and put in fresh fluid.

Deinitely flush the brake fluid to start, it goes bad over time and absorbs moisture out of the air through the rubber seals and hoses. After that, it's just a matter of making sure the adjustment is good, or if it is building pressure or not, etc. Very simple braking system, so it's pretty easy to narrow down the issue.
It never hurts to check or change other fluids depending on how long it sat. Forks you could drain and re-fill with ATF on the cheap. Thats what Honda used to use for fork oil. It will also ensure your fluid levels are correct. The valves would also be worth double checking if you are unsure. Only takes a few minutes, especially if you have the bike apart to do work on it anyway.

Ok… forks and brakes it is.
Are there any grease points that I should hit with some grease? Spokes look good… really can’t think of anything else. I swapped out most of the bulbs with some leds… Seems to be shifting fine… |

Wait… is there a master cylinder for the front AND the rear on the Hawks? I didn’t even bother to look.

Two separate master cylinders for front and rear.
