I know it is not fair for those of you whose memory span is broader than a house fly's wing span, but I write this stuff for the new China Rider. They are the ones who need help the most. So, I thought I found a need, and have tried to supply that need. My goal is to help the newbies at this new to them experience. You guys that have been around the block a few times know how to find parts, how to deal with the Hawk's shortcomes as delivered, knocked down, to their driveway. They have to be encouraged to think outside of the box. It is a bit scary buying a bike where there are no dealerships and no 800-250-Hawk phone numbers for parts and advice. Until they do it. Some of these people have never even serviced their riding lawn mower, let alone built a motor cycle out of the box on their driveway. It is scary to them. Problems seem insolvable. But the good riders on China Riders are willing to do everything possible to help these people get their Hawk experience off to a great start...ARH
That's the whole purpose of forums like this, right?

I know this question has been asked a dozen times before, so sorry in advance. I am having trouble finding a link to pilot jets for a stock hawk carb.

Does anyone have the link? Alternatively does anyone have extras (30 or 35 I believe, I am running stock air cleaner and exhaust but plan on swapping to aftermarket exhaust pretty soon here) that they're willing to sell to me?

I already up-jetted the main to 110. Any help is appreciated. Additionally if anyone has good links or book recommendations on how to properly tune a carb, I really would like to learn.

Good luck finding them. I have been searching since I purchased my Hawk. I'm thinking about just tapping and installing a different jet. I'll have to take my carb off and take some measurements to see what I can make work. I know I could just buy another carb but would like to find a solution for others instead of just buying a new carb. You could just drill out the stock jet.

I'm glad you asked this question, because it tells me that you understand how important the pilot jet is. And not only to low speed running, the pilot jet effects carburation all the way to totally wound out, wide open throttle. Yes, that means it effects choice of main jet size. If your bike has a Shin Wei carb, the pilot jet is pressed in, not screwed in. But you can tap the hole in the housing and install a Keihin pilot jet. Not easy to find, but possible...ARH

It's a bashan bs250gy-18d vs a "hawk" haosen hs250y-a. Same bike different manufactures there may be some small idiosyncrasies. Bashan typically has better quality control.

There's a threaded sleeve that's pressed into the carburetor, not the jet itself. You can unscrew the jet - I think the threads were 4.4mm if I'm remembering correctly.

You definitely won't find anything standard that matches up to it, at least I wasn't able to when I looked into it.

From what I recall at the time, there was somebody online that was tapping them and replacing the pilot jet with something more standard, but the cost was about the same as just getting a Mikuni.

If you have the tools, it seemed easy enough. If you had to go out and purchase them or pay to have it done, it didn't seem worth the bother vs. buying a new Mikuni.

Thanks for your input on the pilot jet problems on the Shin Wei carb. Weird, huh? Why tap a sleeve so you can press in the sleeve, and then use a screw in jet? Unless the idea is to make it non owner serviceable (Read EPA)....ARH

It'll cost you around $10 for a tap that will allow you to use Keihin slow jets in a Shin Wei. I don't remember the tap size off offhand though. The difference between the Shin Wei and the Keihin is the Shin Wei slow jet is threaded at the tip.

Here are the jets that will work once it has been threaded:

or, instead of $10 for the tap, you could spend $18 for a Keihin.

You'll have to use the choke lever off your Shin Wei.

Brakes, forks, and etc.

There is a thread about bad rear brake from lprewitt, if I spelled it correctly. He changed the fluid, and bled his brake until the brake fluid came out as clear as disilled water. Now, you and I don't know much about what the Chinese know about brake fluid. No doubt that the Chinese manufacturer of the brake fluid is supplying what he thinks is DOT 3 brake fluid, or the EU version of it. So, perhaps he is shipping the stuff to the asembly plant in 55 gallon (or the metric version of it) drums. The average worker in that plant knows nothing, except what he has been told, about brake fluid. You and I know, because there have been cars and pick-ups in our lives since birth. We know that the stuff is hydroscopic. We know not to use fluid that has been sitting around in an open container. I doubt that they REALLY know. They may have been told, but that's not the same as knowing. So perhaps they are careless about that drum of brake fluid. Air gets in it, carrying moisture and other contaminates. A factory like this is never really clean. I know, because I worked in one for a while. Working on an assembly line is no joke. The place is noisy. The line moves as fast as possible and still the expectation is a perfect product. I can tell you from personal experience that if you drop a bolt on the floor, loading your air wrench, you just get another one out of the container, because it's faster than finding the one you dropped. Now you have to get that bolt in there quick, because you've already lost 15 seconds. So if it gets in there cross threaded, but it's in there, you let it go. So the worker is not worried about the quality of the brake fluid he puts in there, he's just worried about getting it in there on time. So what? YOU care about the quality of the brake fluid, because traffic in this country demands good brakes. So, be smart and flush out whatever they put in there with American DOT 3 fluid, bleed them until there is not a trace of that brown stuff that came with it, and enjoy good brakes. ...ARH

ARH, what are your thoughts on using Teflon tape on the bleeding nipple thread? I found small leaks on two brand new calipers, so I put Teflon on it, it has been running fine for a few months now.

Until someone corrects me, I think Teflon tape is a great idea...ARH
