Thanks to the nudge from 2LZ I finally got around to putting a twist grip throttle on my ATA250D, and I like it. Feels much more natural than the thumb throttle and I haven't had any problem with full lock turns or anything else. The throttle assembly was only $11.53 from Ebay with free shipping. Came with 2 grips and a cable that was too short so I made a new one. I removed the thumb lever but left the housing in place because it supports the front brake lever and cables. Now all my bikes, quad, and ultralight have twist grip throttles.

Excellent! Do you have a link to it? Is it just a normal throttle setup for a motorcycle that you converted?
It really does make a big difference. Much more natural feeling, as you say. I can see where maybe you may not want a twist throttle on a quad if you ride very aggressively, but for just cruising my property dragging around my cart, it's a vast improvement, especially on the hill with a load. Mrs. 2LZ likes it much better also. It's still up in the air on the Handy Throttle longevity and durability. I really think that most of the reviews who complained about it breaking right away may not have had them set up properly or rode extremely aggressively. Seriously.....it is just a small plastic paddle connected to a twist grip.

My buddy Ron, and I loaded up and took the quads over to some property that's owned by a friend of ours. Almost 250 acres and a portion of it is trails, hills, some steep, long and very rocky. Creeks, streams and some sidehilling involved. As a bonus, the outhouses and portable sinks were still there from a pig roast a couple weekends ago.

Ron had his Honda TRX 450 so I was woefully outgunned but a good time was had. Obviously, I let him lead and hung back to miss his dust (and rocks and cow pies) but the Rhino really took a beating, far more than just hauling a cart around our property. I can happily say that even pounding up rocky hills and going far faster than I'd taken it before and even getting a little air on a couple of surprising occasions, it hung in there and took the beating all day without a whimper. Nothing came loose or gave me a lick of trouble.

I will say this though, as expected, the stock shocks SUCK! Ron would fly over these rocky washed out sections and the TRX would eat them up....and seconds after I'd fly over the same section behind him and I'm sure if someone was looking, I'd have appeared as though I was having a major seizure. Fortunately, the shocks ate enough to keep me from going over the bars...but barely. If I'm going to be taking the Rhino off-property often, I'll need to replace them.

Sounds like you had fun. Was wondering if you cut a little bit off the coil on the shocks if they would be a little softer. The springs seem way to stiff.

I tried to ride mine today. (FAIL) Couldn't get it up the ramps to get it in back of the truck because the rear wheelbase is narrower. Have to get those extenders soon.

Put the Rhino through its paces today, more than just hauling the cart around. I hooked up the landscape drag, dropped on a cinder block and went at it. Chewed up the upper driveway to resurface the gravel from the Winter sink and also, took down all the dry weeds and leveled everything out around it.

With the tall gearing, the CG230 motor did its best to grunt along and did it very well with minimal clutch slipping. This drag and block really starts to plow once the ground gets loosened up and I was quite impressed with the Rhino's pulling ability under those conditions.

I think I will have to get a bigger sprocket made for the rear though, ala "funonemax". I think with that it would be perfect.

Looks like it did a real good job. Did you make that drag bar?

Hey guys I'm back. Work and weather have been getting in the way but will update my thread soon. I did get a WGS 37t rear and 11t front sprocket. Will install and test this week and let you know how it went if it helps any.

One would think, BB! It seems we have regular overnight visitors....especially in the early Spring and late Fall when outdoor fires and camping is at hand. Lots of places to put tents and RVs. For some reason....folks think we're cool to hang out with. Not sure why! ;-) Must be the free cold beer....

I was wondering where you ran off to! Let us know how it works! I'm looking for a "gruntier" gearing.

I have been keeping up on this section over the weeks when I had a spare moment.

With what I intend to use the ATV for I have to have the lowest gearing I can get so took the plunge. I'm sure it will help. 1 tooth on the front is supposed to equal 3 or 4 on the back I think which was why I got the front sprocket too.

With the rear I didn't want to try and relocate and weld a sprocket guard on it if I didn't have too. From what I came up with measuring... that is the biggest rear sprocket you can do. Not sure on it though... will find out soon.

Wow....a smaller front sprocket? i can't remember what I have on my Rhino at the moment but the chain looks like it's making a pretty tight arc. Let us know how it goes! That would be great just to drop a tooth up front.

$30 for a front sprocket seems overpriced when most sell for $10. No picture so maybe it has some sort of special design for limited clearance.

My older ATA250D uses 428 sprockets and I have a 78 tooth overlay sprocket from a 1967 Trail 90 that will bolt right over the stock 40 tooth rear sprocket. That would be a great low gearing but would give me about 2" of ground clearance.
