TT250 Catalytic Converter

I plan on doing some various stages of performance mods to my TT250. I have the 14/47 sprocket combo installed and the 17/45 for future install. I am debating a 30mm pumper or Lectron. I have a spare head from CSC and have already done a bit of porting and polishing to it and plan on decking. I bought the eBay exhaust but haven't installed it yet (don't really like loosing heat shields and gaining a melted airbox). I was on CSC website learning about the various parts of the emissions system and came across an interesting picture that had me questioning my eBay exhaust purchase.

Can the catalytic converter be simply removed by unbolting the exhaust? (It's part #19 in the picture) From the picture the Cat is a separate part and I can't see how it installs in the exhaust unless it simply inserts between the header pipe and muffler pipe. Can anyone confirm this?

Also is there any performance gain from an emissions delete or is it just weight savings?

Only one way to find out, Unbolt it and see. Sure would of been nice it the Hawk was like that.

True, and it's not like there's much else to do these days. Too windy to have a nice enjoyable ride so why not. I'll take a picture of my findings.

Just make sure you wear some gloves and a mask if anything needs to be cut. Usually cats contain cadmium, which is highly carcinogenic.

I didn't find a Cat where the two pipes joined like I hoped for easy removal. I can slide a wire through the entire 'header' pipe, as seen in picture, so I don't think there's a Cat anywhere in there. I was able to push a tape measure several inches inside the muffler so no Cat in that pipe either.

Is Zongshen following in Volkswagen emissions foolery? Was there different versions of the TT for different markets? Or am I missing something?

There could be a cat in the muffler; it's tough to tell without performing exploratory surgery. I removed a cat from a China scooter muffler.

I thought the cat always had to be as close to the exhaust port as possible, because they need to be as hot as possible to work correctly?

I called CSC and asked the service manager where the Cat is and he said it's inside the first part of the muffler. It might end up being even more difficult to remove then on a Hawk and keep the exhaust intact. On the bright side if you replace the header pipe on a Hawk for a TT250 header pipe then you don't have a Cat to worry about.

I recently got the Apollo 250 Deluxe but I'm not able to ride it because the throttle was all busted up, anyway, I've been starting it a couple times a day letting cool and repeating but stopped doing it when I noticed the pipe getting red hot. Today I noticed where it was getting hot was just rear of where the pipe curves coming out of the engine, and that area the pipe has about a 6 inch area where it's a slightly larger diameter than the rest of it. I'm assuming that's where my cat is. If so there's no way its coming out without cutting it out. Just a thought.

That sounds logical to me. Not every aspect of our bikes is well thought out. It's really up to us to work out the details.

I think a cat delete improves performance when the bike is jetted right. Also runs cooler and like you said, weight reduction.

I would buy a $40 ebay moto muffler, mount it up and call it a day.

Hey, didn't respond to the question earlier, but unless you're planning on doing a lot of mods, just get a PZ30B (pumper version of what you've got). Honestly, a Lectron would be a waste of money on a bike like this, if you're thinking of spending Lectron money, you could do a bunch of upgrades on multiple parts of the bike first.

I never priced out a Lectron but they seem to be all the rage these days on YouTube. Most likely because they were given out for free. I totally agree, too expensive for a bike like this.

It was in the muffler on ours, if I remember right. I just changed the whole exhaust system out but I thought the Ebay system was a bit loud....but I'm also getting old and deaf.

If you cut the muffler and remove the cat, make sure and disable your air injection or it will cook your muffler packing.

It'll also make a big bang when you let off the throttle.
