I had a ninja 250 before the hawk. If I am not mistaken it had about 25 HP. But had to rev it to get the most out of it. I would miss the grunt of the thumper but man it would be a lot faster for sure. Also reving it out to 12K rpm would be fun.
I reckon there is a reason why enduros are for the most part all singles. I would by lying if I said I have not thought about it. But I am not the most mechanical fella in the world. Give it a try and post what you fins! |

They are listed at 29.6 HP, it may depend on what year though and I guess tuning too. Was just looking at the Ninja engines since they off the top of my head I knew were small bikes and can handle freeway hours. The Rebel motor looks way too big, I have no idea of their dimensions though. There has to be a true 250-300cc engine out there that would work. |

The reason most enduros are single cylinders is because of the torque a thumper can deliver down low. When you're at lower RPM and just trying to crawl up and over a tree root, or get out of a rut, that's where a single is happiest. I started out on a Ninja 250 way, way back when. That bike did the Las Vegas to Phoenix trip a couple of times, and was just fine. Only slightly more CC's than the Hawk, but it ate up highway travel like it was nothing. The reason is partly gearing, but mostly how fast the engine can spin over. A big single has more piston travel to create the same displacement. A small parallel twin only has to move the pistons half as far, and therefore can spin twice as fast. That's a very oversimplified way of stating what's really going on. In the end, stuffing a Ninja engine in a Hawk would be good for someone like me who uses the Hawk almost exclusively on-road and as an around town runabout. For someone who uses the Hawk off-road and running trails, not so much. They would change clutches more than they change oil.

I picked up an old ('70's) XL350 engine with these thoughts in mind. It might not be worth rebuilding, but it'll be good for mock-up. I'd like to stay at 400cc or under, to keep the insurance cost down in my area. The engines that have crossed my mind (in no particular order) are XR400, DR400, XT350, XR/XL350, KZ400, XS400 and CB400. I had a CB400, but that parallel twin was so wide I sold it. I suspect the KZ400 and XS400 would be similar, so they're off the list for me.
Can anyone think of other 350/400 singles that aren't prohibitively expensive?

I'll sell you my whole DR650 setup, complete and ready to ride the Trans-America Trail for $8,000! That makes good financial sense for the price of a Hawk, right?
