2002 Yamaha Grizzly 660

Thaaaaats right boys!
you read that correct!

Last Saturday we went over to Vancouver Island and purchased a used 02 Grizz....and when I say used I mean she has been ridden hard and put away wet many times.
But....for what I paid for it and even if I have to put (and I do) a few $$ into it I will still be ahead $2,000 so I am ok with fixing a couple of things.

here she is in the back of the truck on the trip home waiting for the ferry.

and here is the result of me loading it for the first time o_0

TAKES UP THE WHOLE BACK OF THE TRUCK!
and with the 28" Mudzillas on it I can't shut the tailgate

Took it to my buddys shop today to do some work to it.

so much meat on these tires ...gona be a hoot with 4hi, 4hi locked, 4lo & 4lo locked

big ass bumper and a 3,000 lb warn winch on the front

ball on the back and room for another 3,000 lb winch (my buddy has a new one in a box I want )

stopped at the Yamaha dealer and ordered a new rear output shaft seal for it but when we hunkerd down to see what was needed to be done to get it out we find this...

can't see it??? here let me get closer

obviously this has been broken at least one time and I doubt that it was welded properly and balanced.
so we figure that the vibrations is what took out the seal so taking it and all its jewelry to Yamaha dealer and seeing what is needed and what is not.

here you see where the seal has made its way out ....the cup is supposed to be right against the housing .....and it is not so that means that the vibrations have also loosened the nut that holds it all where it is supposed to be.

oh well a couple of parts and good to go. my buddy is working on the display to figure out why it lights up but there is nothing on the screen.

so I finally have all the parts to put this back together now
new rear oil seal = $free due to dealer dicking me around and making it right
2 new universal boot kits = $60.00
new drive shaft & rubber seals = $150

and I think that the old welded one was a bit short after the P/O botch job on fixing it

will have this back together and running and testing it next weekend

well it has been a while since I posted anything (been busy) so here goes

this is a pic of me with the grizz after taking it out for the first time with TCCK

I finally manage to get us one of these garages for the back yard and now I can work on the machines anytime I want.

and the wife and I went out this weekend up to stave flats for a much needed day of riding

loaded and ready to go

was a great day except the Grizz kept over heating a lot so asked a couple of other guys up there that had big machines if they could have a look and it turns out that my water was not circulating so we shut it down for the day rather than do damage to the machine

this is what I found after tearing the machine down the next day

took out the rad first to see if water would flow through or if something had blocked it

no small feet as the previous owner decided to weld the bumper to the frame instead of fixing it properly

but I did get it out and other than bent fins (I can fix that) water ran through it great ...ok so that's not the problem

next take out the thermostat and what do I find?

hmmm stuck open with a bent pin keeping it there......ok not a problem as the water should have just flown right on through (ordered a new one)

go to other side of machine and remove water pump

ahhhhhaaaaaa!!!!!!

I think we found the problem here

new one ordered (thanks TCCK)

so yesterday I decide that I want to see if I can clean up the plastics a bit. did some research and find that 60% paint thinner and 40% boiled linseed oil mixed is a good one for oxidized plastics what the hell lets give it a try.

wile it does restore oxidized plastic it just basically cleans (really well) worn out plastics but I am pretty impressed with what it did.

the grill before

and here is the shortened vid of me riding and finding a pretty good hole and finally I get to test 4wd/lo/diff lock

I will post the vids this evening when I get home

That water pump looks pretty sad. Glad you found it before there was any real trouble.
