Armored mesh is great. I'm mostly an ATGATT guy on the street and in the desert and it works well.

I find that on the Harley and Gold Wing the mesh is still very hot because their efficient fairings block almost all the wind though.

Ahh, the joys of owning a 35 year old bike.

The throw out bearing decided it was time to retire on the way home from work last Friday. There weren't any real problems, just a bad rattle that went away when I pulled in the clutch. Turns out the TO bearing is a basic 6000 roller bearing. Buck and a half or less for a cheap one, under ten for a good one.

I ordered a Japanese Nachi brand from Amazon for $12 with shipping and found out that my company sells a Chinese Peer brand. My cost was $1.48. I bought both to compare the two. Radially, there was little difference between the two. Axially, the Nachi was heads above the Peer. So the Nachi went in.

I also had another CX owner over, David, who is having a TO rattle and wanted to see how it was done. Drain the oil, disconnect the clutch cable, remove the clutch cover, and there it is. Two small screwdrivers under the bearing, a quick push and it's out. Press the new bearing in with the heel of the hand, make a new gasket for the clutch cover, reinstall the cover, hook up clutch cable, fresh oil and filter, done. One hour. Done.

While we were at it, I wanted to check if the PO had lubed the final drive splines when the new tire was installed. David wanted to see the splines. So we pulled the rear wheel to have a looksee. It had been done and a high moly content lube was used. Good there. We relubed the splines again with some very high moly content lube. We also replaced the rear shoes while the wheel was off. The new shoes are grooved so that should take care of the rear brake squeal.

It was good to have some help for once.

Yes, Spud, I was appreciative of Daves' help. Which makes me think there is a motorcycle jack in my future. The sight of Dave and myself trying to lift the backend of the bike to get that wheel out must of been comical.


I got to try out out the new brakes on the ride into work this morning. Jackass in a pickup did a right turn on red right in front of me and I was doing 45 at the time. The brakes work quite well now, thank you very much.



I gotta hunt down a new pair of shorts.

Owing any type of stand greatly facilitates rear wheel and drive train maintenance. Even a relatively inexpensive, swingarm stands help a great deal. For example, I really like my T-Rex swingarm stand.

I use a 5 gallon pail as a bike stand...LOL i get em free out of construction site dumpsters... Once the painters are done on the job...i used to use a milk crate but that wasnt tall enough for my shineray...

Our senior citizen members need alittle extra help. Lifting a 500lb bike onto a 5 gallon pail may not work well.

I only ride bikes i can pick up after a crash and get back on the trail....LOL so its no issue for me...LOL

And that's with an empty fuel tank. Some us AARP members also prefer a smooth ride, quiet pipes, and big fuel tanks. And I bet I'm not the only AARP member around here that enjoys the guilty pleasure of the occasional 0 to 60 under 5 seconds blast.
As for picking it back up, that's what tow trucks are for.

A bit of an aside, I had a Harbor Freight lift for the Hi-Bird. It was too small for the CX, so it went with the bike. Anyway, I had the bike on the lift, probably doing wheel bearings. I finished the job and, with my right hand on the rack and left hand on the bar, I kicked the release pedal.


I had forgotten that the side stand was still down.
My left foot will never forget that day.

I enjoyed that sale as well, and nearly bought the same flashlight. I finally got a set of 6 ton jackstands and a 1/4" torque wrench. Two armloads of stuff for about $83.00.
