The way things are these days you have to work when you can. Better than being laid off. Myself I have to many irons in the fire. When I get up on Saturday mornings I just have to pick one of my many projects on my list and do it.

The economy is booming. Dow jones 24k+. combined national retail sales up 7.1%. From what I see in texas... why the lay offs?

In simple terms, a new regional director came in with big plans (they always do) and wanted to spend a bunch of money to update things that should have been updated years ago. In exchange for the millions of dollars granted to said person by the great corporate entity they had to let go of about 70 people between 3 facilities.

You know, the white collar mindset of "we can do more with less!" and all of the other typical grand schemes that sound good on paper. Ultimately, a lot of it will fail. In the meantime they will be forced to pay the rest of us overtime, because all of the "less" isn't actually enough and it will cost more than simply keeping the people they got rid of.

Ahh.

In a similar vein, the company I do work for bought 3 large companies 1.5 years ago and this past year layoffs occurred, probably got in over their heads with the integration costs and in turn dismissed some key people , (that kept things running smoothly) and kept the do nothing mid levels in my opinion.

Like cheesy's chchch changes thread. We need to open a work rant thread

Ranting about my work would be a daily thread update lol. I am hopefully going to land a similar position with another company soon. They are expanding and need a bunch of technicians for their new machines. My normal pay rate would be the same as my overtime here. Just a change of hours.

I am actually going to get home tonight, so I may be able to do a little more work.

The Here, hows this for 2 hours of slow tedious material removal? This is the exhaust side looking into the head. I still have more blending and smoothing work to do, but honestly, even as is it would be a huge improvement. Once I am happy with the bowl and guide are I will try to round out the flange side.

Well, being home and getting my carbide burrs in kind of helped too.

Just for comparison, a side by side before and after so far. Note that in the after picture you can actually see the end of the valve guide, where the before picture it is hidden. A lot of material got removed around the top of the guide.
I took a valve side shot to show it a little better. I still want to do a bit more work around the sides of the guides, and then blend it all together a little more, but I want to try and remove as little material from the bowl as I can, so a little of that recess around the bottom of the guide will likely stay where it is. We will see though. My main reason for this is to try and maintain some velocity. The port opens up quickly between the seat and into the bowl, and opening it up too far could kill velocity. So my main focus has been to simply remove any flow path restrictions.

You can tell I couldn't help but hit the guide a couple of times. The carbide burrs I am using are even fairly small, but there isn't a lot of wiggle room to work with. This is one of the tightest exhaust ports I have worked with, so I am having some small issues. Already made a couple of marks here or there from the teeth on the chuck of my die grinder. Oops. Ah well, it's all fixable.

Note from the Editor.

First of all, after a couple of requests so far I want to state something so that it is known for all. I am not offering a porting service. Believe me, I would love to offer to port heads for people, but because of the time involved and my own lack of time right now, it just wouldn't be financially sensible for either party involved. I have put 5 hours into this head so far and I am not even close to done. Let's say for comparison sake it took me another 10 hours before I was finished, and I charged a measly $25 an hour. It would cost almost $400 in just labor, per head.

This is a project you can take on yourself with a very small investment in tools. I am using a $15 set of carbides from Amazon, and they have worked beautifully so far. They are the right shank size to work with a rotary tool, and it doesn't have to be a dremel. Honestly, for $50 and some time you could do this same work. If you are concerned about screwing up, buy a second head like I did (that is why I bought one lol).

These are the burrs I am using. They are a little short, but just long enough to reach the places you need to reach. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

These will do a majority of the work to remove the material. The trick is to stop short of what you consider "finished" and then complete the work with grinding stones and sanding rolls and even regular sand paper and your fingers.

Yes it really opened it up. I am focusing a lot more on material removal from the exhaust side than the intake. In my opinion, the exhaust side is where a lot of lost power is with these heads, so I am being a lot more aggressive in the port work.
