KPXRandy 1000 mile review

I bought this motorcycle new from a dealer in east Texas two months ago and I have put over a thousand miles on it so far. Below is my 1000 mile review.

Here is a quick overview if you don't want to read my comments below.
This is a good motorcycle for 250cc. It is not a speed demon and preforms
well on trails, dirt and gravel roads and will cruise easily on back FM roads.
On rolling hills its runs easy at 45-55mph on flat roads it runs 50-60 mph.

Why I bought it?
I have big street bikes that will not go off road and I wanted something
smaller that would not fall apart exploring dirt and gravel roads.

Why did I buy the KPX 250?
It was least expensive, it was available and it looks solid.

Honda CRF300l $5799, otd (out the door) $7540
KLX 300 $5899, otd $7375
KPX 250 $3599, otd $3999

Performance comparison:

Honda crf250l 0-60 15-16 seconds
Kaw KLX250 0-60 10-12 seconds
Yam XT250 0-60 10-12-seconds
KPX 250 0-60 16-17 seconds (my actual test)

Engine performance:
This motor is rated at 20hp at 7200rpm. It hits peak torque at 5200rpm.
This motor is probably putting out 12-18hp below 5200rpm.
There are vids of guys doing 75mph on this motorcycle but if you try
it it sounds like the engine is about to fall apart. I have hit 70mph
on mine and it will do it but I don't think it is built to do that
all the time.

In my opinion the power band is between 5000-6200rpm and that is where
I do most of my riding.

1st 0 -12 mph (trail gear)
2nd 13-22 mph (trail gear)
3rd 23-33 mph (comfortable crusing gear)
4th 35-45 mph (getting up to speed gear)
5th 45-70 mph (road gear)
6th 50-70 mph (once you get up to speed)

Acceleration:
I will go on a highway and cruise at 60-70 mph if you have an
acceleration lane but I would not try to go from a dead stop
to highway speeds if a Mack truck was approaching. You will
be a red spot on the highway.

Likes:
Good instrument panel (gear indicator, fuel gauge and rpm are nice)
Tall (I have a 34" inseam)
Shifts goood
Getting 82mpg
Mirrors don't vibrate
Good foot pegs
Fuel injected
Comfortable riding position
2 year warrentee

Dislikes or problem areas:
Tall kick stand, could be a little shorter
Bad chain, it stretches and needs constant adjustment
Came with wire screen oil filter (I replaced with WIX filter)
Hard to buy parts for
Hard to find anyone that knows how to work on it
User websites (this is getting better)

Overall I like it. It is 250cc and I hope it turns out to be
a good purchase. Time will tell.
