Speedometer gear

I ride a 2006 Lifan 250CC- I bought it used from a friend, and the speedometer wasn't working. I replaced the cable and greased the new one, which worked for a while, but has recently quit on me. I suspect the gear is out- but I have no idea where to go to get a new one. None of the parts places in Denver have been able to help me out.

Any ideas?

Its easy to tell if the drive has failed. Remove the wheel end of the cable, lean the bike over on the kickstand to lever the front wheel in the air. A helper would be nice. spin the wheel. If you don't see the end of the drive gear spinning that's likely the problem. If it does turn, and the cables good, the speedometer head unit has failed.

I believe you have a street bike right? If the drive is the same as the dual sports I may have one.

Otherwise the 250cc crusier bike was a clone of the yamaha virago. Not sure how close a clone though.

Hi trippy_hare

Tell me are you talking about a Lifan LF250 / C25 Street bike? If so, I have a speedometer drive that goes on the front wheel.

It's a cruiser style bike- I don't have pics handy atm unfortunately.

I'm not sure I want to go to the trouble of finding a speedo gear for the virago, since I'm not sure it will work at all. Though, if all else fails, I just might. I tried contacting Lifan directly, but... well... their customer service leaves much to be desired.

That brings me back to the question- where would a guy find one of these parts? I'm not opposed to buying a part from someone here on the boards, but I would prefer getting parts I need from a supplier or manufacturer, so that there is a "paper trail" as it were for me to pursue should the part be incorrect or should it fail again.

OK, I guess he may not understand. You can't Buy parts from the Manufacturer in the USA. You can't go Directly to American Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, Harley Davidson, Ducati, General Motors Ford etc. & buy parts, they will send you to a Authorized Dealer.

Just an FYI, and trying to explain, no pun intended.

As a Lifan Dealer, I will send you the correct parts as long as you supply the correct information for the vehicle that you own... Per: Year, Make & Model of the vehicle. If you are not sure of this I will need the 17 digit VIN number from the vehicle to verify the above information.

In almost 7 years of being a Lifan Dealer, I have ever only sent one incorrect part, due to it being sent to me incorrectly from Lifan.
