Some detail pics:

The numbers are on the CDI. Unfortunatly there is no bulge on the CDI, Spud. I was hoping for an easy relief answer there but not yet. It just looked bulged due to the rubber strap in the 1st picture. I checked the fuse and it was good.

Note the side cover is already 2 piece:

More of the carb:

Front wheel and rotor:

Instruments and top tripple clamp:

Rear rotor:

Silly little pseudo ABS thing?

Aftermarket(?) breather filter:

Fork:

CDI:

Looking at the carb screws it appears someone has been in there before and maybe rejetted it?

I just discovered a difference in this Yamaha clone engine. 8O The exhaust port of the ZS250GS engine is on the right side of the cylinder head, and the Yamaha exhaust port is on the left side of the cylinder head! Therefore, if I wished to install the 230cc, ZS177FMM engine in my 200GY-2 motorcycle, I would need to use a different exhaust header.

Thanks for the additional photos, Doc. Yes, after I re-examined the original photograph, I noticed the apparent bulge was an optical illusion. Your CDI unit has a different part number than the 200GY-2 motorcycle, which is LY200 607009.

Duly noted. Please refer to my post regarding this subject.

I think your USD forks are very similar to my 200GY-2 forks, Doc.

The small filter appears to be coming from the crankcase ventilation hose. I believe this hose originally emptied into the carburetor intake area. I think this hose was disconnected, and the small filter was substituted to prevent oil from being sucked into the carburetor intake.

The screws in question hold a cap covering the deceleration diaphragm on the carburetor; I don't know why anyone would screw with them (pun intended)!

When you have time, please read my post regarding the swingarm, and lower shock linkage; I would love to see photographs of these areas!

I noticed that ABS gizmo on the other pics... Wonder how it works? I believe the Saga 250 has a similar setup, vaguely remember seeing them on it anyway. With the bigger engine I would imagine that the bike would have no problem doing highway speed? Really nice looking bike with virtually no miles, bet you could get it running, tune it up and turn a tidy profit if you were so inclined

Cheers,
Stew

A lot of the Chinese bikes employ this "ABS" device; I've read it has dubious efficacy. The 230cc engine should have about 17 percent more power than the Zongshen 196cc engine; however, I would still not take this motorcycle on limited access highways.

You got a great deal on a nice little street bike, Doc! I love the parts compatibility this bike has with both the Yamaha, and the Zongshen 200GY-2 motorcycles!

I like the tachometer, and the fuel gauge! Did I mention I believe you made a major score on this motorcycle?

I will be when it starts....

I hooked it up to a good battery. I does have spark but it seems weak. The spark plug was brand new so the prior owner did try to troubleshoot it I think. What causes a weak spark with a new NGK plug? Maybe it is the coil?

Needless to say no ignition. Not yet, anyways.

I bet even if it won't start I know someone who will take it off my hands for what I have into it...

Yamaha TTR230 engine

It may be a clone of this one.

Doc, I need a deal on a zong like that. Looks like a great commuter.

That looks like my motor allright.

I think it would be a cool commuter, and a super easy bike for new riders, and plenty quick around town. I bet it would give 75 plus MPG too.

How many gears are in the transmission? The XT-225 engine has 6 gears, and the XT200/TW200 engines have 5 gears. Zongshen obviously modified the cylinder, cylinder head, and exhaust header.

Here are the figures for the Zongshen engine: 72.5mm Bore x 55.7mm Stroke

Here are the figures for the Yamaha engine: 70.0mm Bore x 58.0mm Stroke

Therefore, the connecting rod, cylinder, piston, piston rings, cylinder head, et cetera, are different between these two motorcycles.

I have a frame that engine would bolt right into.

I like the tach and speedo layout, and the rotors look like they're in nice shape.

The plug is the new NGK I bought for The Dirt Rat but have not installed yet.

The tranny is a 5 speed.
