Ok, I changed the fork oil and did the "Double Nickle Shim" kit. Yikes! Those are some tiny springs! I am impressed with shim kit, tho. It really seems to help with the dive on hard braking. My forks had 200 ml of fluid in one fork and 190 in the other. I put 200 ml in each fork. I read where Ariel Red Hunter said that they require 210, so I will add 10 ml to each fork.

From an engineering point of view, there is a reason to use small diameter springs in forks. A small diameter spring, of the same as installed length as a larger diameter spring of the same wire diameter is stiffer. Why? Because it is a shorter piece of wire before it is wound. Think of it as a torsion bar. The shorter the bar of the same diameter, the stiffer. The diameter of a torsion bar is directly related to the diameter of the wire that is wound into a coil spring....ARH

yer that is pretty much correct... and is the reason they have gone to such big Dia
springs in the USD forks.... the return action is less violent and easyer to control...

So I finally got to really see how my double nickel trick with 10 weight fork oil works . We have no snow and ground went back to be frozen . An hour playing in ditches , jumping into and out of ditches , lots of ruts doen into my woods . Super happy with it now for sure . Even pretty high wheelies and bringing it down feels way aceptable for me . BTW I would slap on anther front end if I had one that fits. But this is my first small bike in over 20 years , maybe more . I did see if spare KLR650 would work but triple tree is way longer
Glad to read it's working out for a few of ya.
ARH thanks for informing all of spring engineering concept . I was just amazed at how small it is . .

My KX125 is a 1980. The shop doesn't look like that anymore and I didn't ride that bike after that picture was taken, it lives out in the shed now. That is a first year Uni Trak. Some day I will fully restore it...

The Kawasaki KX60 was the same for so many years. It had the same gas tank design and a modified linkage. The guys at the motorcycle shop at the end of the block were working on one about a year ago. They did hot laps around the block and I couldn't report them because I wanted one more lap.

Mine lives in the lounge right under the TV.....
the wheels sitting against the wall are for the other Montesa..
That looks shocking...must get the skirting boads on the walls... sometime...
but working on motorbikes is more fun....
