The chicks only seem to be available Mar-April in the stores here. I wanted to get started earlier than last year so I ordered direct from the hatchery in Missouri. They are overnighted to the post office in town and I pick them up there.

We got Barred Rocks, Easter Eggs, Rhode Island Reds, and Cinnamon Queens. The Barred Rocks are for my boss. He only wanted a few, but you have to order 15 chicks to have them shipped.

Going to build a small coop for the two large chickens we have now and the new ones will move into the big coop about April.

My father was postmaster in the small village in which I was raised. We had a lot of small farms in the area. I remember my Dad received boxes of young chicks at the post office in the springtime.

I think postmaster would be a fun job. Ours will be calling me at work when they arrive.

I hope you have better success this time. Did the girls ever learn of the predators?

Yes they have. We did pretty good keeping them as long as we did. Coyotes and fox are a problem here.

I plan to set up a large run area for the chickens this year. Better security.

I built a brooder box out of 2" foam insulation in the shop. 4'x4' and 2' tall. Has a lid too. Set up two 125 watt heat lamps about 10" off the floor. It was 99 degrees in about 15 minutes in there. Perfect for little chicks. I have the lamps on zipties so that I can just cinch them up to raise the lamps later. Also I can slide half the lid off to let heat out.

It was 50 degrees in the shop tonight. Suppose to get cold this weekend, but I think we will be fine.

The chicks arrive on Friday, don't they? Please post photos of the chicks, the brooder box, and your lovely helpers.

The should be here today. I am sure they are ready for a warm shelter. The last tracking update had them in Wichita. They travel 2 hours further West than needed so that they can come back.

We will bring the camera out tonight.

Postmaster called right as I was leaving this morning. I made a quick stop at the post office and then dropped the chicks off in there new home. All of them were alive.

Got some pics today. We got them eating and drinking. Emilie was training them. We need to go back out and check for pasty butt. Requires warm damp paper towels.

My boss brought his little boy out to see them too.

I hope to be able to reuse the brooder for a few years. Easy to take down and re assemble. We are raising 8 chicks for others. They will get them about April 1st.

We wiped some chick butts last night. Will need to trudge through the snow we are getting and check them again today.
