Had the first real Ural hiccup Saturday afternoon. Had me thinking it might cost many rubles but it was a cheap fix, just lots of time to diagnose.
Anyway, after the pic with my new friend was taken, the two of us were in a parade for Bike Bald, a children's cancer organization. Two miles in first gear with a lot of stops. I killed the engine if the stops were more than a couple minutes. The bike was parked for a couple of hours during the rest of the festivities, where I kept saying "No, it's not a BMW.", "Yes, it really is a 2007"., and "Yes, it really is a godless commie Russian motorcycle." I'm almost home when I had to do a bit of WOT maneuvering to keep from getting smooshed. About a hundred yards further down the road at a normal speed, the right cylinder backfired through the carb and shut down. I got the bike running again and got home with the cylinder cutting in and out and farting through the carb. Long story short, I got it squared away. A lot of carbon deposits in the right cylinder and I'm guessing something broke loose and ended up on the valve seats. So, carbs were gone through, correct plugs, new K & N air filter, and balanced carbs. I only got a short ride in this evening, so I didn't get a chance to yank a plug to check the color but all is good now. A few pics of Saturdays' event. 1951 Aston Martin. Unrestored and owned by the same family since 1953. And a ubiquitous 57 Chevy. 1956 Lincoln Continental. Had a built 390 under the hood. Lambretta. FDR giving a speech. I kept calling this guy Cap't. Hastings after Hugh Frasers character in 'Poirot'. Even though he has Lt. bars. One of the corrections on the Ural. The right, sooty Autolite plug is supposed to be a direct replacement for the NGK on the right. I don't think so.

Do you have a compression tester? It would be interesting to know if the cylinders are within 10% of each other. Love that Lincoln!

Anywho, on a warm engine that just had 5 ounces of Seafoam shot into each carb and smoked the neighborhood. 124 psi on the cylinder giving me problems and 118 on the other. One last carb issue to suss and that is new fuel filters and rerouting fuel lines.

Running really nice now.
I had some free time this morning and rode down to the local Ural dealer. One, to get some seat time. Two, to see if I could get some small parts thus supporting a local business. And Three, to see if I could meet Jeremy, the local Ural Wizard. Got two out of three. Jeremy doesn't work weekends. I did have a nice chat with one of the business owners, though. She asked if I got my Ural from them and I had to tell her no. Then I mentioned that I had sent two emails requesting a test ride and received nary a reply. I saw the 'deer in the headlight stare', followed by a reddening face, followed by a sigh, and then an apology. Methinks someone may be in for a butt chewing. I was able to get the parts I came in for, a pair of oil filter seals(mine was missing, got an o-ring in its place). I was offered a pair of Russian oil filters cheap, so I got those, too. Here's out front. The one I'd wanted to see is the Patrol on the left. The Gray one is a Gear Up like mine. The orange one is the CT. The CT is the sports car, the others are Jeeps.

The carb work and tuneup paid off. Up to almost 29 mpg.

Glad she is running good!
Good on you for supporting the little guy when you can. I do the same with some bicycle stuff from the LBS's. Neat pic to see so many Urals. Happy to see you are still having good riding weather.

Speaking of 'modern antiques' my Enfield will get 70 MPG but it takes a loooong time to go that far ;-)
As far as range goes you can store jerry cans in the sidecar and have enough range to cross Siberia, which I'm sure was part of the Ural's original design parameter.

I'm killing time at MIA this morning and had a think. I need a bicycle rack on the Ural.

That's the spirit!!!
I'd love to see that. On the Gold Wing forum I've seen some well engineered bicycle racks. With the sidecar I bet there are plenty of ways to do a good job. I'd be EXTRA jealous for that.
