If anyone is considering a cooler installation, I'd be grateful if you could figure out how to measure temperature before and after, like with a HF temp gun.
I considered using a basic electrical Sunpro, Bosh, or Stewart Warner temp gauge. They usually run around 20 bucks, and sometimes can be had for even less. It could be setup for testing purposes only and removed, but the question is where should the probe be located? Easiest would be an inline fitting, but it would be hard to do so without the cooler in place. I supposed an inline fitting could be used for the temp probe and a pair of rubber lines looped out, and back in, then connect the cooler up and do so again. It's possible that a thread adapter could be used to mount it in the drain plug position, which would give a very accurate measure of oil temps in the engine.

It's looks like a rained out weekend so I guess I'll start working on a skid plate.

Celsius is workable. Just take whatever number you see, double it and add thirty; that gets you really close. As a frame of reference, 100 Celsius is the boiling point of water.

Hey JerryHawk250!

Hey JerryHawk250!

I'm liking your ideas! Not that I'm hoping for crappy weather in the bayou, but if that's what it takes to get some cool Hawk 250 accessories....desperate times!

Ok, first tell me about that very cool windscreen! How did you make it? What size lexan did you start with? Height x length and thickness, please! How did you mold it? How is the tape holding up? If you were to make it again, would you do anything different?

Now for the skid plate! What material are you going to make it out of? How are you going to attach it to the bike? Any other cool features? Air holes, drain holes, led lights?

Have a great weekend!

The wind screen is about 1/8" thick. it was 9" wide and 12" long. The 3m tape has held up well. Have you ever tried removing body molds of a vehicle.?It's not coming off. more info here on how I made it. http://www.chinariders.net/showthread.php?t=18830

The skid plate is going to be made out of 1/8" steel plate only because I have a piece laying around otherwise I would make out of aluminum. I'm sure I'll pop a few holes in it for air flow and looks. only LED is the headlight, not into bling but functionality. The bike was dirty in the video from the trail riding over the weekend. If the rain holds off we may go again on Saturday morning and ride till it starts to rain. Get a free wash job on the way home. lol

Wet Gauge

Hey JerryHawk250,

I was with the Marines, a long, long time ago, in a swamp far, far away! Here's their moto, " If it's not raining, Charlie Company is not training!"

Here's my personal rain gauge: when your boots are full of water and your undies are soaked, you are officially "Wet"!

As for the skid plate.... I was thinking about an led to light up the oil cooler, so I could look for leaks/damage.

As always...we love pictures!

Have a great weekend and enjoy the ride!

lol We went riding in the Bonnet Carre Spillyway about a month ago and the National Guard was training out there. We had to wait around a couple hours until they moved out. I think they felt bad because there was a line of trucks with ATV's, UTV's and dirt bikes waiting to go ride and they left out 2 hour before they were suppose too. One of the guys had to come check out the Hawk.

I got some ride time in yesterday morning before the rains came. I know this means nothing without before readings. Temperatures yesterday low 90's , low speed trail riding and wot every change i had for 60+ miles. I took readings at the spark plug 233* and at the cooler 149.6. What are your Temps at the plug with out cooler? Just curious.

Rubber core hose surrounded by woven steel. I doubt there are going to be any accurate readings to go off of. Possibly the in and out banjos right at the oil cooler, but without sufficient airflow there is no way to get a good working reading.

The best place to get a good measure on an oil coolers effectiveness is in a flow of oil before it goes through a cooler. This will give the best idea of a systems effectiveness on the entire system by showing the hottest the oil gets before being cooled. Without a cooler in the system, that oil should be hotter at the same point - assuming the cooler was bypassed with a loop just to test how effective it is. As long as the oil is staying at or below 250 degrees, then the oil should resist thermal breakdown.

Honestly, before readings of the same points could also tell a great story. I don't doubt that this cooler is making a difference, as obviously it's more cooling than the motor had before.
