If you can get to 70 that is about it.

Reliably--you are pretty much maxed out on one of these. 75 is pushing it, and then would be a peak rather than sustainable riding at that speed. According to 'CSCDude', his new Zongshen RX3 bike would be doable to cruise at 75. Otherwise, you would have to step up to a Japanese bike.

X3 on the top speed. You can only expect so much power from a 223cc, air cooled, carbureted engine operating at Great Basin altitudes.

OK, just reread this...I am guessing you are looking at the stock speedo for your speed. Any Chinese speedo that comes with these bikes tends to be optimistic. So, yes, you can make your stock bike faster, but, unfortunately, you still won't be cruising at 75 mph sustained speed.

You can change your front sprocket to a 17 tooth, and your rear sprocket to a 44 tooth, and change your carb. to a Mikuni 30mm (found on Ebay, probably clone carbs, but still work well with all the aftermarket jets), and will gain top speed--might be able to hit 75, but, again, not a sustained 75...

Coincidentally, here is a thread not too far down from this one, and there is a link to the Mikuni carbs there...

what makes the rx3 able to cruse at 75, but not the storm ... it it a larger motor, or maybe a dohc motor?

It's liquid-cooled for starters; It seems to me that liquid-cooled bikes are able to generate more horsepower than air-cooled engines, besides the fact that the RX3 engine is probably built to more tolerances, as well as it is an original engine. Versus the CG-based engines which were found in bikes in the 70s, and have probably not had much change in design since then. I can't remember, but I am certain it is buried in the RX3 thread(s) on which sprockets the bike comes with as stock, which is reason #2. I think #3--the RX3 is a six-speed transmission, and that would be pretty much as many reasons as we need to show that the RX3 will pretty much always have a faster top speed than any of the bikes with CG-type engines.

thank you for that info ... if it were not out of my price range, i would have picked that one over the storm ... it really does need a 6th gear

I agree. With increased compression comes increased horsepower, and the by-product is increased heat. A radiator is needed to control that heat, once you've gone beyond the tipping point of what an air cooled motor can tolerate.

A CG engine isn't necessarily built to looser tolerances, but it has a relatively low compression piston.

A six speed may or may not allow freeway travel. The rest of the story is that rev potential depends on the ratio of rod length and stroke, and gearing depends on the primary reduction ratio. All of that depends on the frame of architecture, which dictates the available space.

I think I can drop a six speed out of an XR200 into a CG engine, but that won't necessarily allow for freeway travel. While you would think that it would provide another gear on the top end, it doesn't. It actually inserts another gear between two existing gears, to limit RPM drop during acceleration. Off the top of my head, I can't remember if it's between 2-3 or 3-4.

I do remember, long before understanding the ins and out of bikes, but coming across a deal where a friend went into the Navy and sold me his 640 mile '91 DR250s for taking over the $96/month payment, the bike had a six speed and could do an indicated 85+; this was before GPS, when my friend was riding my DR and I was in my 5.0 Capri (the rare Mustang twin), and both our speedos were showing this and then some on one of L.A.'s freeways. I believe my friend hit over an indicated 90! Yes, it was the 250, and no, this was NOT verified, but felt pretty quick, nevertheless!

what is the the first 3 digits on the storm's VIN? The WMI will determine if I can get one registered in CT without doing the VT trick.
