Head Scratching Test Ride 3

OK. Another night, another glorious ride through town! No costumes this time!

My riding partner had a 115 Main jet and a 14 tooth counter sprocket, so i bee-lined over to his place after work.

One confounding factor is that the temperature has dropped to 46F this evening. Also note that the sprocket cover would not fit with the 14 toother. Might be able to trim it out.

The 115 main behaved well during warm up, I let it sit on half choke for a few minutes while I rounded up my DOT pumpkin hat and some warmer gear. It pulled hard and felt clean. Immediately noticed no more lean decel popping.

Rode the same uphill route that I had the previous 2 nights- temps were 330-350 with a peak of about 375 at the top of the hill. Could be a combination of lower rpm and cooler temps so no significant conclusions there.

Between town and my house there is a little stretch of highway, so I opened it up and managed to hit about 60 mph, but the revs were too high so I backed off. Accelerating up through the gears it was apparent that the motor ran out of steam at 9000rpm; it would just go flat. Noted that at 55MPH my tach was at 8000 rpm. After a quarter mile at 55MPH the temp was 387 and climbing, however it dropped as soon as I began to slow for my turn. Still seems hot, but I guess spinning 8K will do that to a motor.

There was also a slight hesitation or surge when decelerating or cruising 1/2 throttle. Not always, but every once in a while it would cut out just a tiny bit. The 115 may be too big, or I need to drop the needle one clip.

More tuning to do. And some re-gearing to figure out too. I think it would be nice if it would cruise at 55 at 6000rpm or less. Don't want to lose climbing gear either.

are you running 40# or 50# chain on that? i have been curious if a 14t 50# sprocket fits these china motors, as my 13 is real close....LOL

Its a 520 chain. Same one I ran on it all last summer. The 14T is very tight to get the chain on, but it clears the guard. Rubs on the cover, but it might be possible to "clearance" the section that rubs.

good to know... you must be screaming to get 55 out of that sprocket combo... i have a 13-38 and i top out about 60 on flat land.... fastest i have ever hit was 72 downhill with the wind at my back...LOL you wouldnt happen to have the part# for that 14t handy would you?

as a side note.. i lost my sprocket cover a few yrs ago so no worries there....

JT Sprockets JTF328.14 steel is what my buddy loaned me.

Playing around with a gearing calculator leads me to want to try a 14/45 which would be 10% higher than the 14/50 and should put 55MPH right at 6000rpm.

That would allow me to swap the 13 on for those days of gnarly single track that we sometimes ride. Often 5-6 hours and we will only cover 30-40 miles. Fun stuff.

You could certainly have more gearing options if you switched to a 428 chain like these motors normally power. That said, it'll be a challenge to find a 428 rear that'll fit a CR wheel.

same issue i have with the sumo conversion.... 420 spec'd sprockets are non existant for the rear wheel....

I prefer to stay 520 just to have commonality of spares with my riding compadres. Ordered up a 45 tooth PBI rear sprocket today.

Mounted the 45 tooth sprocket and shortened the chain one link. Bike is really a smooth cruiser now. The temperature was mid 40's and the 115 main jet is spot on at this altitude and temp.
Motor seems stronger with the longer legs. Going to take it out this weekend for a long off-road trial run.

41 miles of very technical desert single track yesterday. The Zong motor performed flawlessly!!

First little while it ran ok.... then something happened and it just flat out ran amazing for the rest of your trip. Looking at the temperature log on my Trailtech shows that I hit 415 degrees early in the day and after that it never went over 400 all day. Break-in seems to be happening.

The torque of this thing is awesome. I can now steer with the throttle input again. It will also pull 3rd gear in places I couldn't before. My riding buddy was on a bored/stroked 218 with a custom cam. Ever since he built that motor I couldn't keep up with him... I still can't in the tight stuff, but now the Zong seems to at least allow me to reel him in on the faster straight sections.

The only downside I can see is the loss of the 6 speed. With the higher gearing this motor requires to hit 55, my first gear isn't near as low as my old setup. Might just take some getting used to. We climbed some pretty gnarly rock walls and a few loose, loose silty sections. As long as I could keep my ground speed up it wasn't a problem.

Lovin' the Zong after this outing!!
