Ouch! What are we looking at? Kinda looks like a flywheel, but I'm not sure. What was the cause?

It's the crankshat primary sprocket and magnet rotor inside the stator which has been torn off it's crankcase mounts by the broken chain.

What caused the chain to break? Was there a bad spot in the chain that you can tell?

It was English and old as dirt.

I tried autopsying the chain b ut it's a mess. Multiple links missing.

Good question! They don't usually 'just snap'. 8O

Well Andy finally got the engine out but lacks the wrenches to take it apart. I'm glad I'm not in a rush...

UPDATE:

Andy gave up. He didn't have the tools.

I love him but wish he'd have told me this 2 months ago...

I found a collector and mechanic who works ONLY on BritBikes locally. He had a shop with about 25 restored bikes and bins and bins of parts.

He even had a Royal Enfield (a 2006) he let me try out. I loved it!

Anyways he says he will have the engine apart by tomorrow so I can have the case welded. He says he can then have it all back to together quickly. All for $30/hr!

Will post updates and pics of his shop.

Maybe he'll trade the BSA for the Enfield...

Whitworth tools needed I take it?
see this http://westernmass.craigslist.org/mcy/2609369477.html
It is a collection her dad had (he ran a bike shop in palmer mass for years)
passed away and she has all of it to sell. you may be able to get parts from her but I am not sure she knows a piston from cam.
The Bsa is a neat bike.

Wow that's an amazing collection!

Looks similar to the guy's collection who's working on the bike now.

The BSA is very cool 8) but I think I will be selling it.

Too difficult (and $) to keep going and I like to ride a lot. To be honest I'd much rather be riding my 1972 Honda CB175 than the Victor.

The only Brit bike (sorta) is a new enfield that I would own I think. The brit company's went out of business for a reason. Poor quality and management.
Neat bikes non- the less.

The link I sent, the guy had a new (only pushed in the shop ) Norton In the showroom. Not for sale. he had some guy from the middle east offer 20 grand (and this was 20 years ago when I was told this) and he turned it down. knowing him he died before he sold it.

I like the old Jap Iron as it is what I grew up on.
the little China 163fml motor I have from the parts bike is interesting.
(I have a 73 Honda XL175 with the kick start broken , like most of them and no parts available)

Drop your Chinamotor in there. Likely a direct fit.

The shop rate of your new Brit bike mechanic is awesome! Any chance he'd let you snap a few pics of his shop?

I have to drop by there on Saturday. He's also having an antique bike show Saturday. I'd enter the CB and the GS in the show but I'm working Saturday at the clinic.

I'll bring my camera.

I will have to build new mounts.(no problem) I bought the motor and rolling chassis for 50.00 and the engine is in decent shape. (if I install it I will put a new cylinder and piston in. ) the China motor is much smaller. (the 175 is a unique motor, no other xl one is like it. )

I am attempting to fix the broken part, (I have some Ideas) but we will see.
