Boxster update:
Ordered a Gates waterpump. Came in and didn’t fit! Impeller hit the engine insides. Evidently, they increased impeller size slightly for the 2005-2008 911’s and somehow I either got the wrong pump, or someone put the wrong impeller on it at the factory. Visually they look the same. Ordered a GEBA. Made in Germany. Wrote an email to them, and the CEO of the company sent me a very nice letter, with diagrams, back explaining the difference. I was quite impressed! Installed it and all is well. Meanwhile, ordered the OEM NOS Porsche overflow tank. Came in, new in box (well, the bag). Ad on eBay said with cap and sensor. But didn’t have those, so the very nice seller deducted 50$, for a total price of 20$. Thank you eBay seller! The old tank had an obvious crack (actually 2 cracks) in a molded curve at the bottom. That is a pain in the butt to install. Need the special remote clamp tool so bought an Advance Auto version and helps a bunch. Works great and car is now driveable Fans: ok, so, the over engineered Porsche’s have 2 front fans one each on their left and right radiators. They were acting weird. I verified that they were only working at the high speed. There is a resistor in the harness that drops voltage for low speed operation at lower temps. They burn out all the time evidently. Both of mine are burned out. Sooooo, Porsche wants about 145$ per resistor. China wants about 2.50$ per resistor. Which way do you think I’ll go? 100watt, .5ohm if anyone cares. Lots of YouTube info on the hack and getting them back to working. Also, there is another hack that just eliminates the low speed and the high speed just comes on normally when the lower temps are reached. I might try that. Seems like it is eliminating a bunch of hassle. That’s it for now! Still love the little car! So fun to drive!

I did the elimination hack of the high/low speed fan to only high speed (super easy jumper wire thing at the relay panel) but also ordered 2 Chinese resistors for a total of 10$ from Amazon.
Will reverse the hack and install the resistors when they get in. Requires removing fender liners, and a couple other items to get to the original resistors.

Got 5$ resistors installed. All is working as it should!
Meanwhile, tackled the 7.3 F350 oil leak. The turbo pedestal o rings. Half done!

Got a chance to buy a 500$ very beat, 1997 Boxster. I’m in Alaska right now so just been thinking about it, but probably will buy when I get home. Can’t resist, and, can’t believe I couldn’t make money selling parts off it at minimum...

It supposedly runs! 2.5 flat 6 water cooled. The tow company that sold it to me (friend owns it) supposedly had it started. No movement tho. I’m guessing clutch. Was abandoned along a highway. California registry. Will have paperwork for getting a title tho. When it’s dropped in my driveway I’ll dig into it and see what’s up. Parts def could be for sale. But not sure how you’re gonna get them to Georgia ...

Boxster in driveway! But, I had to leave immediately and help my mom move as her moving truck arrived from Alaska. So, when I get back I’ll be able to start tinkering and see what’s up.

Today I cleaned the car out and got it running! It’s stuck in reverse. I’ll put it up on stands tomorrow and see if it’s linkage related. Seats are completely ruined. I think this car sat around with the top either down or missing or shredded. Then, it got some body work done and they put a new top on it. But, passenger airbag is missing, front clip is another color under the paint and the seats are garbage. But it runs! And sounds decent!

Clearly it’s time to build a Myers Manx ! Mine would wheelie down the highway with the Subaru wrx sti engine in it ,a flat 6 Porsche would be even better in the cool dept. at least .

Subaru engine would probably be way cheaper and more reliable. I’ve had a few of those too. Just had some headgasket issues with a 1998 version. Fixed it tho, drove it across the nation and then to Alaska and back.

You honestly don’t need much in a 1300lb car ,the Subaru was a lot of fun ,but my son was just about to get his drivers licence and was eyeing that car ,and no teenager needs a car that wheelies 40-50ft so I got rid of it .
The Porsche engine is cool ,and would have wallets flying when finished ,so a good investment . |
