Spent some of the companies money. Tool bag, pressure gauge, and a tank of gas. Spent some of my own, too. Mother's Day present from Buster(he has no money, freaking free loader)and a second 5 ohm Tjet HO armature.

Note to self: Do not exceed 18VDC at the armature. It lets the smoke out.

Problem Gnawing at my wiring

And I am wired up, I tell you

A few weeks ago, I took a trip to Chicago to renew my wife's Spanish passport at the embassy. On the way back, I decided to check the oil. Surprise! I found that a squirrel had partially shredded the hood insulation pad a little and had been starting to build a nest on top of my engine. I have a base model '21 Jetta 6 speed with a tiny (but remarkable) 1.4L turbo gasser. They were too cheap to include an engine cover on this model

I parked it when I got home thinking nothing of it. It sat there for two days while I dealt with yard debris and hauled some hardwood logs for next year's firewood supply (using the truck).

I popped the lid to show my younger son what had happened, and HOLY SH@T, half the insulation was shredded, and there were leaves and sticks on my engine threaded into a cozy bed of foam chunks from the liner. No squirrel (lucky bastard).

I removed what was left of the hood liner, and vacuumed up all of the foam chunks from the insulation. Most anyway, some were way down. Then I began to encounter a few small sections of WIRE in the nest, and sure enough she had taken some of the wires from my harness as well.

After cleanup, I tried starting it to put it into the garage to work on. It started!!!! Smooth idle, as usual, but a warning light ("EPC" I think) was on, and the then computer posted a notice in a big rectangle telling me "3000rpm Maximum". Maybe the turbo controller is offline. FLickn bad luckn...

SquirrelsNest.JPG

Used harnesses are READILY available for the ubiquitous DSG (automatic) version, but not for the extremely rare 6MT Jetta. So instead of a "modest" $250 or so off ebay, I got to buy a brand spanking new harness for almost $800 after shipping.

Oh, and the squirrel also nibble a patch of plastic off the top of the battery too so I can see the acid still covering the plates. It is holding a charge, so I will clean it up and duct tape the heck out of that for now.

You might say, make a claim. Well, the Volkswagen warranty (certified "preowned") is excellent, but doesn't include varmint damage. And I own it so no need for comprehensive insurance, which would actually cost as much as the harness in two years- comprehensive insurance on late model vehicles is absolutely outrageous these days.

So I am beginning the task of disassembling the thing and extracting the harness. PPPfffftttttt!

Unplanned purchases are the WORST!

Back ordered. No date on when this harness might be ready from manufacturing source. Well, I guess this means it will be all fresh wire/connector plastic/insulation wrap. Small consolation.

EDIT -GOOD NEWS!
The new harness is on the way. I should have this installed within a week. Damned squirrel!

Not exactly today, but a Vita. Playstation handheld they quit making years ago but I always sort of wanted one. Ordered one from Tokyo. Arrived yesterday and last night after everyone else went to bed I got it up and running.
One reason I wanted it is that you can connect it to your PS4 and play THOSE games on the small screen. So I could potentially play the PS4 while the wife watches whatever godawful stuff she wants. There is some of the same functionality on a PC but in my case it doesn't seem to work very well. I think I need a new router. Anyway a Vita will direct connect by wifi to a PS4 and it did. So late last night I was quietly chortling to myself while squinting at tiny Fallout 76.

Another reason to have one is you can hack them to run all the PS1, PS2, and PSP games. Plus all sort of old Nintendo stuff if you want. Saving that for later though.

One thing I didn't know was that apparently a Vita will remote play the PS3's too. I will have to blow the dust off the old PS3 and check THAT out too.

Sony has been threatening to pull their online store for PS3 and Vita software for quite a while now. When they do it will cut sharply into game availability. Part of what made my finally pull the trigger. Some of the actual physical games are getting harder to find and a few are starting to bring collector money.

Did you test ride the KLR first?
It’s a lot taller than rx3 right?

Yes I rode the KLR at a demo ride event a few weeks back. I was hooked at that point and knew this is what I want. Yes it's taller and heavier and I do like the torque of the 650. They do have a S model that does have a shorter seat height tho.

Mrs.C said I should check out www.temu.com so I did. Bought a new smart watch. I’m impressed with Temu, $2.99 shipping and the watch arrived in less than ten days. Not so much with the watch. Or should I say the app the watch uses. The app has some nice features, but seems to be lacking in others. The cycling feature on this one gives heart rate, riding time, and calories burned. My old one did that, along with distance, average speed, max speed, elevation gain/loss, and a whack of other info.
The watch is a Senbono XO1. Several really nice dial choices and it uses OLED for the screen. Really bright. My dislike is the battery life. My old Amazfit has a 30 day battery life. This one, 7-10 days.
I told Mrs.C that I’d try the watch for a couple of weeks and if it doesn’t cut it, I go back to the old one and give this one to my grandson.

Yeah, that didn't even last a week. The app kilt it for me and I really wanted to like it.
