I have this engine. Some part may work. It has been sitting in my pile for a couple years. I think it is a 1984 yamaha 225dx engine.

I just got home from buying some oil for the ATV and I am calling it a day as I am not feeling well. We'll try to get things back together tomorrow and if things work out, I'd be interested in buying the piece to replace the broken one on Justin's machine. I'll check tomorrow to see what else we need and I will be in touch. I'd still welcome comments on the questions that I asked in my earlier posts from anyone too.

I'm not really familiar with the Yamaha that your engine might be cloned from, but I have seen the Yamaha Bruin 400 next to the Baja 400 that it is cloned from. They were identical in every way, except the number of headlights and one sensor that wasn't drilled and tapped on the Baja model. I think it might have been a low oil pressure shut-off, like on a Briggs and Stratton. Perhaps your son's quad is closely patterned after a 250 Yamaha in the same way.

It looks like the pinion gear can drive either ring gear, providing forward and reverse. I'm guessing that a shift fork engages the shaft and slides it forward or back. Is that your opinion? I use Castrol Syntec 75W90 gear oil in the differential on my daughter's quad, although it's chain driven.

I'm only guessing that you'd need to remove the drive shaft to replace the boot, but I'd change it right away.

BTW, nobody has mentioned yet that if regular car oil was used, the clutch might slip. Only non energy conserving oil should be used with a wet clutch, such as 15W40 diesel oil or four stroke motorcycle oil.
