I'm gonna have to read that at least ten times for maybe half of it to sink in. Dude, I've learned more about engines in that one post than the sum total of all my attempts to learn engines. Engines, to me, are like computers to some people. MAGIC. Crazy engineering and science, too.
I looked at a computer and just "got it". I look at an engine and I can see a couple major components, but when you start talking about rockers and lifters and cam lobes and valve lash, holy crap does my head start spinning. Like, this is the first time ever I put my hands on a valve and did an "adjustment". How do I donate to this site?

CCW, looking from the left side; i.e. the direction the motor normally turns. Pull the spark plug so there is no compression. Otherwise you might accidentally loosen the crank nut that you are turning the motor with.
Also, you may find it is impossible to get it to stay exactly where you want it, which is at the proper TDC (both valves closed). You get almost there, then the motor spins past TDC by itself. You have to turn the motor with a solid wrench, not with something that has a ratchet.

the push rod OHV (over head valve) CG engines tick especially when cold...its normal.
OHC (over head cam) are a little quieter as long as the timing chain is tensioned correctly. If the ticking and tapping is regular and responds to revs its the nature of the beast... when things cackle or clunk irregularly or strained is when the concern starts. |
